ASTOKIA, OREGON:
SATURDAY.
, SEPTEMBER 13. 1890
A LUMINOUS BUOY.
Extebments with a luminous buoy
invented by M. Dibos have been made
at Havre. By improvements, effected
since a previous experiment, in the ar
rangement of the phosphuret of cal
cium in the apparatus, the inventor
has obtained fewer intermissions in
the production of the light and a pro
longation of the duration.
A first buoy, thrown into the chan
nel opposite the semaphore, emitted a
powerful light upon coming in con
tract with the water. During this
time a boat left the harbor, and when
about a mile and a half out,
another of the buoys was
thrown into the water, which
lit up the sea within a very large
radius. The power of the light was
such that the men at the lighthouse,
two miles and a half distant, saw it
clearly with the naked eye. It has,
besides, been proved in former trials
that the light can be seen at a dis
tance of five and a half miles. The
French authorities intend making
trials of lighting the channel on the
Seine, from the Amf ard bank to where
the dikes commence, by means of
decked boats with masts about two
meters high, on the top of which will
bo placed a light of this kind.
"With a desire to have more anti
quarian relics in his house, a wealthy
citizen of Milwaukee, "Wisconsin, went
to Egypt and purchased two mum
mies for $2,500, brought them across
the Atlantic, and paid S400 duties on
them. Proud of his curios he opened
the cases in New York, and as soon as
the bandages were taken off the skulls
collapsed and the mummies became
small heaps of dust And now the
wealthy relic hunter is out $2,900 for
a few ounces of dust, and will seek to
find the manufacturer of bogus mum
mies. The continuation of active work
may yet secure tho removal of the
Willamette University to this city and
the erection or magnificent buildings
fur this time-honored institution of
Iretruiug. It would be a grand thing
for Astoria, and should be secured.
Portland apie.irs to bo doing but little

Ax electric typewriter is being con

from Boston, and vice versa, the com
