Yesterday afternoon the Telephone brought a number of government officers and leading citizens of Port land, who camo to make a trip to the jetty. The government steamer QeorgeH. Jlendell, Capt John W. Brown, met the Telephone at her dock and took from her the following passengers: John Tweedale, chief clerk of the War Department, Wash ington, D. C, and his wife; Major Lydecker, TJ. S. Engineers, Van couver, Wash.; Capt T. W. Symonds, TJ. S. Engineers, and Mrs. Symonds; Major and Mrs. H. H. Northup, CoL John McCrakeu, Mrs. James R.Mc Craken. P. W. Gillette and wife, Mr. and Mrs. K. B. Knapp, Mr. and Mrs. F. K. Arnold and James E. Bangs, dramatic and society editor Oregon ian, Portland. They were joined here by Major T. H. Handbury, United States Engin eers, Mrs. Handbury, Miss Virginia Lewis, H. B. Hegardt, assistant en gineer. Mayor M. G. Crosby, Capt Geo. Flavel, Samuel Elmore, H. M Thatcher, Alex. Campbell, Capt Thos. Crang, of the Telephone Geo.Hibbert, ot the Town Talk, and a representa tive of The Astoriak. The Mendell was only thirty-five minutes in making the run to the pier at Fort Stevens, where J. W. Stone man, overseer of the work, had an en gine and two pars in readiness for the party, who were soon seated on the open cars. On we go across the wharf, passing several wharves now many rods inland but which were once standing in deep water, as the sand has gradually ac cumulated and formed solid land en croaching on the river. Turning to the right, the trestle work leaves the shore and heads out toward the ocean, over which the train rolls rapidly, and the party begin to fully realize the novelty of their position, apparently crossing the ocean on a train of cars instead of a vessel. Below and around us are the rolling waves of the ocean, tossing and heav ing with their ceaseless, tireless mo tion, yet we feel it not for wo roll on ward as steadily as if upon the solid laud. Bent after bent of the trestle work is passed, each sixteen feet apart aud numbered plainly so that the dis tance traversed is always indicated, until we pass one numbered 20,000 and wo realized that the train is that number of feet from the mainland, or nearly four miles out on the bosom of the broad PaciGc ocean. Beyond us for nearly two thousand feet, or four and one-sixth miles the road extends, but time is limited 'and we go no farther. A few minutes on this most western railroad of the United States we tarn, and the de lighted visitors enjoy the novel situ ation, watching the foam-crested bil lows as they break far inland, while around us the long rolling swell is coming in from the laud of Confucius, and wo discern nothing save the blending of tho ocean and the sky, where the Horizon terminates our vision. The air is hazy and tho view is com paratively limited. Up the coast is Capo Hancock, with the high bluff surmounted by the lighthouse which marks tho entranco to 'the royal Co lumbia, and beyond that a short dis tance tho wooded point closes the view. Sonthward stretches the beau tiful Clatsop beach with Point Adams light in tho foreground and Tillamook head in tho distance. The air is not clear enough to show the lonely Tilla mook rock and tower. Up the river on plain and hill As toria is seen, bat all admitted that they believed tho timokis in the near future when tho hills would bo thickly settled, the iron horse of the through railroads would make tho woods and waters ring with the shrill whistle of incoming trains to "meet the many vessels which will be induced to enter hero by the completion as intended of the valuable jetty, and Astoria will take her place as one of the most prominent shipping ports of the grand old Pacific coast The return trip is made, the ocean and its restless waves are left behind, we turn our backs on China and Japan and in twenty nunutes are once again in Oregon. Fort Stevens with its thirty-four guns looking silently at us over its parapetB.is seen at our right, quiet in its grandeur and grand in its silence. Reaching the wharf, Major Handbury and Mr. Hegardt open the doors, now closed for want of governmental- ap propriation and show one of the two massive hoisting engines which operate the huge derricks, and easily lift thirteen tons at a time. When asked by one of the ladies when the engines would be used, Ma jor Handbury replied, "When Ben signs the bill," and all agreed with- Mr. Tweedale that if Ben could be here now and see the grand work for him self, he would sign the bill at once. Bidding adieu to Major Handbury and wife, her daughter Miss Virginia Lewis, Mr. Hegardt and Mr. Stone man, with many thanks for their cour tesy and attention, we step on board the Mendell, Capt Brown takes the wheel, and in thirty-seven minutes we are at Astoria. The genial face of that young old boy, C. S. Wright, smiles a generous welcome and the party enter the din ing room of the Occident, where a fine dinner is served, and partaken of with a keen relish by the voyager?, who have been sailing out over the ocean in a railroad train. Through the kindness of Capt Thomas Crang, the Telephone waits half an hour so that the dinner is fully enjoyed without abbreviation and at 7:30 p. m. the visitors are on tho handsome boat and starting swiftly up the river, carrying with them delightful memories of their visit to Astoria, tho jetty and tho mouth of the lordly Columbia river. Whv the mill of the Columbia Elver Packing Company at Skamok- awa, did not take a trip skyward and cause the death of a nnmber ot em ployes last Tuesday is a mystery. When the mill was closed down in the evening a crack in the boiler eighteen' inches in length was found. There had been a steam pressure of 110 pounds on the iron throughout Ltheda)'. The boiler is npw undergo ing repairs ana tue mm is sunt aown. Children Cry for Pitcher's Castoria (Then Baby was side, we gavo her Cwtoria. Accompanied by his wife, lie left Washington July 12th on a vaca tion. The' have been to Alaska and viewed the wonders of that immense region, returning by the cities of the Sound. The. trip yesterday to this city and the jetty interested them greatly. They will leave Portland tolay for San Francisco, thence across the continent to Washington, stopping at prominent points. Mr. Tweedale is a very courteous and agreeable gentle man, and will carry back with him pleasant recollections of his extended trip. It is a pity he could not have remained here longer, bnt he is anxious to return to duty. Coming down on the" Telephone yesterday Mr. Tweedale entertained the party with recitations, so admir ably rendered as to bo exceedingly en tertaining to the company, while" the splendid conversationalist James Bangs of the Oregonian also con tribnted'largely to the pleasure of the trip.
