li) BSli s fcc gaity fotfmt. ASTOBIA. OBEGON: THURSDAY. , SEPTEMBER 11. 1890 2ow that the Senate has passed the tariff bill, and the river and harbor bill is awaiting the president's signa ture, there is but little more "work for Congress, and it is probable that an adjournment will be had this month TJxdeb the provisions of an ap portionment bill introduced in Con gress yesterday, Oregon will be en titled to an additional Representative. That will be good enough if the bill only passes, but the introduction of a bill is one thing and the passage another, and the trouble is that the latter course does not always follow the former. Let us hope, however, that it will in this case. Steoxg efforts are being made by the Pacific Christian Advocate, of Portland, to secure the removal of the Willamette university to that city. The last issue had a long edi torial on the matter. Our committee should make strenuous efforts to raise the required subsidy of $123,000, and then make the offer for it to come to Astoria. It is worth making a grand bid for, as it would bo of ines timable value to this city to have the university here. The sad story of a wrecked life is told in our telegraphic columns where n member of the nobility, far away from his native land, after encounter ing numerous reverses and gradually Hearing poverty, is reduced at last to penury, wanders away into the mount ains, starves to death, and his lifeless body is torn, mangled and partially devoured by beasts and birds of prey. It is a sad tale, and cannot bo read without feelings of pity for the poor unfortunate mortal and his dreadful fate. Universal admiration at the extent and importance of the work of the jetty, was yesterday expressed by all the distinguished visitors who nearly all saw it for the first time. Though they had read of it, they never felt so impressed with regard to its magni tude until Ihoj' made a personal in spection. ITr. Twecdale, chief clerk of the war department, on his return to "Washington, will have an interview with tho secretary of war and tell him how it appears to an observer. He says that the officials at "Washington hnve little idea of tho extent, the resources and the needs of tho great Pacific coast, but that what he has seen on his trip will enable him to talk with them and convey to them such informatian as will enable them to have more correct ideas of this vast section of country than they had previousb' entertained. Had to be Health. Horse-dealer "You had better buy the horse, colonel. Yon will never find a healthier animal." Colonel Jones "I believe it If he hadn't been healthy all his life, lie never could have lived so long." SCROFULA Is tliat impurity of the blood which pro duces unsightly lumps or swellings on the gl:uids of the neck; causes painful running sores on the arms, legs, or feet; dc elopos ulcers in the eyes, ears, or nose, orten caus ing blindness or deafness; is the origin of pimples, cancerous growths, or the many oilier manifestations usually ascribed to "humors;" and fastening upon the lungs, causes consumption, and death. Being Jiie most ancient, it is the most general of :.!1 diseases or affections, for cry few lrMMis arc entirely free from it. Houscean CURED By taking Hood's Sarsaparilla, which, by the remarkable cures it has accomplished, often when other medicines hae failed, has proven itself to be a potent and pecul iar medicine for this- disease. Some of these cures arc really wonderful. If yon i.afler from scrofula or impure blood, be sure to try Hood's Sarsaparilla. " E cry spring my w if e and children have been troubled with scrofula, sores break ing out on them in -various places. My little boy, three 3 ears old, has been a terrible sufferer. Last spring he was one mass of sores from head to feet. I was ad bed to use nood's Sarsaparilla, and we l-i e all taken it. The result is that all ha e been cured of the scrofula, my little boy being entirely free from sores, and all four or my cldldrcn look bright and healthy." W. B. Atiieutox. Passaic City, N. J.
