Washingtox, Sept. 8. Senator Sherman's scheme for reciprocity with Canada has fouud a great deal of favor. Congressman Hill, chairman of the committee on foreign affairs, is enthu siastic in its favor. He said this merning: "The present Tory govern ment of Canada has what is called a standing offer of reciprocity, but it is limited to a list of agricultural pro ducts, which they export to the United States, and which we never send to Canada, and this is frequently re ferred to by Tory voters, who desire to trade with the United States, and which Sir John Macdonald and his followers by this ingenious device, can say that they offer us and we refuse. AVe would probably sell to them, with unrestricted reciprocity $100,000,000 worth of our goods and products per annum, and that trade would go on increasing. Wo had a one sided and unfair reciprocity un der the treaty of 1851, which was so unsatisfactory that we terminated it, "but even under the arrangement our trade with Canada increased by leaps and bounds. "With reciprocity, their tariff in the meanwhile standing against Europe, we would sell them within the nest five years nearly everything they get outside their limits, that is most of the imports of Canada would bo drawn from Iho United States. On the other side they would reap even greater advantages by entering upon a new prosperity like one of our west ern states." NO CHANCE FOR APPEAL. Important Discovery in the Scaling- Ca;cs. Special to Tiik Astorian.1 New York, Sept 8. In a recent interview with tho Paris correspon dent of Ihc Herald Sidney Webster said: 'Secretaries Bayard and Blaine could each havo properly enough said lo England, that our conrts aro open to vessels and persons inconvenienced and England must exhaust her reme dies before she invokes diplomacy." The Herald's Washington corres pondent to-day says: 'Researches made have disclosed tho fact that so far back as the winter of 18S7, an ap peal to the Supremo Court had been taken in the case of the British schoon er II'. . Say ward, condemned to forfeiture in tho District Court of Alaska for scaling in Behring sea many miles from the nearest land, aud that the British authorities had used every effort toward bringing tho case to a hearing aud decision, but were frustrated by the omission of Congress to provide for appeals in maritime cases from tho District Court of Alaska to any intermediate circuit court or di rect to tho Snpremo Conrt This omission made tho decree of condemnation rendered by the Dis trict Court at Sitka, and the penalty so far as the judicial department of the government is concerned final. Mary Herbert and Marie Brown, daughters of prom inent residents of Pleasantville, fought a prize fight in a sixteen foot ring, pitched in an old barn on the out skirts of that village at 3 o'clock Sun day morning. Tho combatants were stripped to the waist and every part of their bodies, exposed to view, bore traces of punishment The referee, seconds aud spectators were all friends of the principals. A report from the east was received in the stock ex change sayiug that rumors of the failure of the great dry goods firm of ,T. V. Farwell fc Co., of this city were current in tho east. The cause of the failure was attributed to an alleged interest of tho firm in tho recent collapse of Potter, Lovell fc Co. J. V. Farwell, senior member of the firm, in an interview this afternoon, characterized the report as a malicious falsehood. "Our transactions withPotter,Lovell & Co.," said he, "were never of such a character or extent as to involve us in any way in financial complications and the troubles that have overtaken that firm." Mr. Farwell said he could not con jecture what gave rise to the report, unless it might be the sinister designs of evil disposed persons. THE WELLINGTON ITIINES. A New Field of Coal The Strike Over. GOULD ON HONEST V. A Royhood Essay Written ly the millionaire. Special to The astouiax.1 New York, Sept 7. Tho World, to-day, makes a leading fcatnro of the following essay on "Honesty," written by Jay Gould when a student at the Bcrthwood Academy, Boxbnry, N. Y. It will bo noticed that tho wise youth did not express hi3 own views on the subject and so saved himself the necessity of explaining, at a later day, his consistency. Honesty is the best policy. By this proposition we mean that to be honest, to think honest and to have all our ac tions honestly performed, is the best way and most accords with the right eous precepts of reason. Honesty is of a self-denying nature. To become honest it requires self denial. It requires that we should not acquaint ourselves too much with the world; that wo should not associate with those of vulgar habits; also that wo should obey tho warnings of con science. If we aro about to perform a dis honest act the warnings of conscience exert their utmost influence to per suade us that it is wrong and, after we have performed the act, this faithful' agent upbraids us for it This voice df conscience is not a voice of thunder, but it is a voice gentlo and impressive. It does not ndvise us to comply with its requests, while at tho same timo it reasons with us and brings forth arguments in favor of right Since no theory of reasoning can be sustained without illustration, it will not be unbecoming for us to cite one of many instances that have occurred of those whose names stand high upon the scroll of fame, and whose deeds are recorded on the pages of history George Washington, who never told a lie in all his life. In youth he sub dued his idle passions, cherished truth, obeyed the teachings of conscience and nererj never told a lie. An anec dote, which is much related and which occurred when he was a boy, goes to show his sincerity. (Signed) Jasox Gould. A Ulazc in Neiv York. Special to Tiik Astokiax.1 New York, Sept. 8. The pack of the Chignik canneries, Mr. Peterson says, was good, the four packing establishments there averag ing 30,000 cases each. News from other districts in Alaska, he said, led him to believe equally good results had been obtained, but he did know what the average pack was. Among the passengers was Gus Hayden of this city. Ho left for Alaska on the Dear and put in his time prospecting for gold and silver in the mountains back o Chignik. To the men on tho vessel ho reported that he had been very successful and had made a number of locations.
