Special to Thk Astokian'.I Washington, Sept. 7. O. J. Meno cal and several other gentlemen of the engineering staff of the Nicaragua canal construction corps, have just reached Washington from Greytown on a short leave of absence. They re port considerable progress already on the great engineering project. Sev eral million of dollars have already been spent and the active work of con struction is now well under way, and so well started and under such favor able financial auspices that the success of the scheme, they say, is assured. The Nicaragua company recently purchased at an enormous expense, the plaut of the American Dredging company, which had been doing work on the abandoned Panama canal, and the dredgers are now being delivered. The Greytown and Nicaragua com pany will operate them itself, instead of letting contracts for such work, as these dredgers are adopted to the work. Already the pior or breakwater extending out into the gulf at Grey town is nearly completed and actual dredging for the canal on the gulf side has begun. The telegraph line from Greytown to Lake Nicaragua, connecting with the lines on the Pacific coast is com plete, and the railway from Grey town laid along tho line of the canal is well under way. At present about 1,800 men and a corps of SO officers or engineers are on the ground and at work. The first work, preliminary to work ou the canal proper, was tho building of a great pier at Greytown, extending 1,800 feet out toward deep walcr. This pier is necessary to protect the entrance to tho canal and work on it wan begun early last January. Seven hundred feet of the pier has been completed. This pier has proved a lucky enterprise. When work was begun on it tho entrance to the harbor was obstructed by a sand bar. The seven hundred feet of pier already bnilt has now changed the currents so that this obstructing sand bar has been almost entirely wom away by the action of tho water. THK COUNT -OF PARIS. lie Speaks of His Son and the Royalists-. Special to Thk .Astoria. ABERFntDiE, Scotland, Sept. 7. The Herald correspondent interviewed the Count of Paris to-day, here, where he is on a hunting trip. Tho Count spoke hopefully of his trip to the United States, to which ho said ho wished to introduce his son, the Duko of Orleans, who was not in the best of health because of his lifo m prison. "When asked regarding the Figaro's articles on General Boulanger, the Count said: "I should not like to go into de tails. In speaking of this subject, he said: "The articles in question contains a great deal of truth. I do not hesitate to affirm that they contain also a large amount of exaggeration and innacenr acy. It is not for me to separate wheat from chaff." 'Do you admit the truth of the story which the Figaro states, as to tho negotiations carried on between General Boulanger and the Boyal ists." To a certain extent of course, such negotiations were carried on by the Boyalists, who wished to profit by the General's popularity. I, myself, have met General Boulanger personally, and always regarded him as a good soldier.". Acquitted of Murder. Special to The Astobiax. CiiAMBEitsnuRG, Pa, Sept 7. On Saturday evening John Bhodes was acquitted of murdering his nephew, Win. Rhodes, by shooting him ou April 19th last. Tho Aen had been visiting Hagerstown, aM., during the day, and while there they had quarreled. On return to their home in this county the quarrel was re sumed, when William drawing a re volver was killed by John. The jury based its verdict on the theory of self defense. Killed, by a Hotel Man. Special to Thk Astoi:iaj.J "Wakrentox, Ga., Sept. 7. At a late hour last night Tom Adams, a negro, raised a disturbance in front of the "Warrenton hotel. "W. J. Norris, the proprietor of the hotel, ordered him away. When Adams assumed a menacing attitude, Norris shot him dead. The negroes of the town are greatly incensed and threaten vengeance, but the white citizens are prepared and do not expect any trouble. Khcmiiatisiu Can Be Cured. illienmatism has baffled the skill of our best physicians, and to-day more men, women and children are suffering from this terrible disease than ever before. Immense Sums of Honey Lost In "Wrecks on the Ocean. The close of the last century seems to have been very prolific in wrecks. The British frigate Be JJrooJ:, lost in a storm off Lewe3, in the United States, in 1793, is stated to have had on board no less than S52,000,000 worth of specie and jewels, taken from an intercepted Spanish fleet while on uui uiye tu xiiuuiii, auu witn It were also taken 200 prisoners. The latter, says CasseWs Magazine, were in irons ou the lower decks when the vessel foundered and all were lost. Many years afterward (in 1881) searcii was being actively prose cuted by a diving company" for the purpose of recovering this specie, the result of which has not yet been chron icled. It would scarcely be believed that valuables have been recovered nearly 2o0 years from the date of the wreck, but nevertheless it is recorded that the good ship UarJeem, which was driven ashore in Table bay in May, 1G1S, and became a total wreck, had on board many cases full of curi osities and antiquities for sale to Eu ropean museums. These cases con tained idols, rare china, glass, sil ver, etc. As lately as 1S83 salving operations were rewarded by the recovery of several of these articles. The china was not at all injured by having been 235 years under the seabut the silver articles had suffered considerably. Another very notable case not only for the amount of treasure on board, but also for the big "windfall" for tho salvors is that of the Thetis, a Brit ish frigate, wrecked off the coast of Brazil in 1830 with 162,000 in bullion on board. The hull went to pieces, leaving the treasure at the bottom in five or six fathoms of water. The Ad miral of the Brazil station and the captains and crews of four sloop3-of-warwere engaged for eighteen months in removing the treasure. The service was attended with great skill, labor and danger, and four lives were lost. A good deal of ljtigation was the re sult, as disputes arose between the parties as to the amount of reward for the salvors. Tho Court of Ad miralty awarded 17,000; the Privy Conncil 29,000, and 25,800 for ex penses. In the reign of James 1L a very suc cessful salving expedition took place. A rich Spanish vessel, which had been lost on tho coast of South Amer ica, rewarded her salvors with no less than 300,000, stated to have been forty-four years at the bottom of the sea. A medal was struck in honor of this event in 1GS7. One ot the most receut cases ot successful salving operations is that ot the Spanish mail steamer Alplionso Mil., bonnd from vj.mui io xxuvaua, in i'euruary, jooo, and sunk off Point Gando, Grand Canary, in twenty-five fathoms of water. She had on board treasure valued at 100,000. Tho under writers who had insured the vessel or ganized a salviug expedition, which was dispatched to the scene ot the wreck in the following May. It is re ported that a few months later most ot the specie was recovered. ICnoclt. The transition from long, lingering and painful sickness to robust health marks an epoch in the life ot the indi vidual. .Such a remarkable event is treasured in the memory and the agency whereby the good health has been at tained is gratefully blessed. Hence it is that so much is heard in praise of Elec tric Bitters. So many feel they owe their restoration to health to tho use of the Great Alterative and Tonic. If j-ou aro troubled with any disease of the Kidnc's, Liver or Stomach, of long or short standing you will surely find re lief by use of Electric Bitters. Sold at 50 c, and Si per bottle at J, "W.
