A Box of Wind Matches Free to Smokers of Hughes & Co I A LETTER FllOJI DEAR CREEK Some Intercstinjj Items About a Valuable Section. Bear Creek, Sept. 6, 1890. Editor Astekiax: I would like through the columns of your valuable paper lo let other parts of the county know that there is such r. place as Bear creek. Bear creek was a howl ing wilderness when the writer lo cated here someseyeu or eight years ago. At that time there were six or seven settlers here, with no roads, no means of communication with Astoria except by skiff, or walk seven miles to Knappa to get a steamer. "When people began to see our loca tion, our natural resources and ad vantages, they began to locate with us. Dame fortune favored us with actual settlers, not speculators. We now have a good wharf and ware house at Svensen'sjlanding, which be longs to the people. "We are not tied to any system of wharfage, storage, primage nor shrinkage. We have a good wagon road about four miles south and west through the main set tlement The steamer Eclipse makes regular trips to our landing. "We have a school house, the school district enumerating thirty-eight scholars; a voting precinct with about sixty-five voters, hence politicians begin to notice us. Levi Knapp has erected a large store building, and is stocking it with even-thing usually kept in a country store. The old original log cabins are being rapidly replaced with nice sub stantial dwellings, which speak well for the productiveness of the soil and energy of the people. There is still room for a few more, and all who settle among us will receive a heart welcome. "We have the best soil, the best location, the most peaceable class of settlers, the healthiest children and prettiest girls to be found on the lower Columbia river, and all within nine miles of the sea port of Oregon. Bear Creek. Passengers from California. The steamship State of California, Captain H. S. Ackley, sailed from San Francisco on Friday, and is dne here this morning with the following pas sengers: H. Osgood returned yesterday from a trip to his ranch on tho Nehalem. Ho had a line time hunt ing and fishiug at his ranch as well as while on the road. He reports that the settlers of the upper Young's river section have been working tho roads between the foot of Saddle mountain and Green mountain, and when he came away they were working on this side of Green mountain. They would probably finish the road to the top of the mountain last night. The peoplo on the Klaskanine are going to work on the road in their district and alto gether great "progress has been made the last year in rendering tho Yonng's river and Nehalem .'county accessible. Ono can start from Olney and drive in a cart to Young's river at tho foot of Saddle mountain. Notice to Mariners. Ofiice U. S. Lighthouse Inspector, Twelfth District. J Sak Fuaxcisco. Sent 3. 3890. Plainlield, 111., makes the statement that she caught cold which settled on her lungs; she was treated a month by her family phy sician, but grew worse. He told her she was a hojyeless victim of consumption and that no medicine could cure her. Her druggist suggested Ur. The steamer Greyhound, Captain Claude Troup, which left here Ved nesday mgrniug-, arrived safely at Seattle Friday noon. To-night will be the last trip of the T. J. Potter after which she will be overhauled and go to the Sound to run between Seattle and Victoria. i The Gen. Canby which has been undergoing a general overhauling will resume her trip to Fort Stevens and Hwaco at 8 o'clock this morning. The steamer Willamette Chief left for Portland yesterday afternoon with 4,450 cases of salmon for the east and one carload of lumber for Salt Lake, The steamer Danube, Captain John B. Hill, sailed for Victoria yesterday afternoon, loaded with flour to be Bhipped to China by the Canadian steamship line. Among the freight arriving on the steamship Columbia was a case of large mirrors consigned to Charles Hetlborn. "When opened one of the mirrors was shattered, and it is now a question of who stands the loss. Mr. Heilborn has put in a claim against the steamship company. Captain "Whitelaw, the veteran wrecker, is at San Francisco, looking after a new wrecking steamer which he is having built there. The new vessel is to bo more than twice the size of the present Whitelaw, and will be fitted up with all tho latest appliances for dealing with wrecked and disabled vessels. Captain Whitelaw believes there is a good field on the eastern coast, and also in Australia, for a properly fitted up wrecker, but as his interests are all centered in San Fran cisco, ho does not caro to embark in enterprises in those quarters. The Alexander, which is being fitted as a whaler, will carry pumping and hoist ing gear, and can be used to advant age on wrecks of small vessels. The Pacific Coast Steamship com pany is said to be contemplating a lino between Portland and Sound ports. Upon return of the steamship Geo. W.Elder from Alaska sho will go to Portland, and the fine, staunch steamship Mexico will take her place on tho Alaska run. Major McLellan, Pnget Sound superintendent of the company, stated that he had no idea of what they were about to do, or re ceived no information in regard to their plans. All the news ho received was about the Elder going to Port land and tho Mexico was to take her place on the Alaska route. Since the strike on tho Union Pacific steamers there has been but ono vessel running between tho Sound and Portland, and tho charter of this will expire next month, and it is very doubtful whether the Union Pacific company will recharter her. It is thought that owing to this tho Pacific Coast Steam ship company are abont to establish a lino with ono boat at present, and as the trade grows they will enlarge their line by placing on some of their other packets. Local Agent James McCabe could not give any information on tho subject. Port Townsend Leader. A Cariosity. Tho Western Watchman, pub lished at Tillamook, is a singular looking paper. A good portion is "boiler plate," and the balanco is put together in a heterogeneous rnauner, nil kinds of typo being used, and tho "ads" are set up without any regard for stylo or beauty. The wording of tho articles is about as bad as the ar rangement of type in the "ads." Snyder knocked the pistol out of the robber's hand, but another man came in at once and presented a pis tol. In the scuffle that ensued Snyder was beaten over the head and face. The robbers took the sack, containing $300, and went out, locking the front door. Snyder, on recovering, went out a rear door and entered his house. The blood was streamiug from his face and head. One shot had been fired, graz ing Snyder's face, and two other shots missed the mark. The burglars made their escape. LUCKY YOUNGSTERS. A Steamboat Built Tor the Children of Millionaire W. K. Vanderbilt. The children f Millionaire "W. K Vanderbilt, witli tho sou of President Carnot, of France, are probably the only ones in the world who have a steamboat for a plaything. Not one of those little tin or wooden concerns that float around in the bathtub, or make perilous trips across innd pud dles at the end or a string, but a real little steamboat, big enough to carry ten people. The little Vanderbilts, true to family traditions, are very fond of water. This fondness for water gave birth in the commodore's des cendents to the wish for u steamboat, and with them a wish has only to exist to be gratified. Their father at once had the plaus prepared for a vessel of tho proper size to navigate the waters in and about a little stream which runs from Great South Bay to Oak dale, L. I., aud intrusted the building of it to Henry Plepgrass, the City Island boat-builder. That was three or four months ago, and the boat is now ready for use. The boat is made with an iron frame and steel plating. It is sixty-five feet long on the water lino aud draws the exceedingly small amount for a boat so large as two feet of water. It was necessary to have the draught very light, as "the creek where it is to be used is not deep. Tho boat is to be owned and con trolled exclusively by the children of the millionaire, assisted by a picked crew of four. The little craft is a side-whcclcr The engines cat up two tons of coal a day and will propel the boat abont eight miles an hour. Everything is designed for comfort on board, and nothing that can add lo the pleasure of the owners has been left undone. -Si. "Louis Poit-Dis- patcfi. SS&jBfu Ces6 C " s? IT 13 THE rDEAIi MEDICINE.
