OREGON: S4TUKDAY... -SEPTEMBER C. 1890 The Columbia ChronvJe pub lished xeeokly at Dayton, Columbia county, Washington, has been en larged, and now appears as an eight page paper of five columns to the Pcc A xovkl way of fighting fire has just been adopted on the vast plains in Xorih Dakota, where thousands of acres along the Little Missouri river were swept by fire. Horses were killed, split up the back, and with long ropes their carcasses were dragged over the burning grass. Some papers fail after they are started, but in Brentwood, California, a paper stopped before it was started. A new paper was about to be issued, and the type was all set up for the first number, but the day before it was to be printed the office and con tents wore destroyed by fire. That certainly was hard luck for the would be publisher. Several telegrams have been cabled to this country of great things which the Marquis de Lenville was to do, and how he would sue every American newspaper which had dared to comment on the love affair and proposed marriage between himself nnd Mrs. Frank Leslie. Now it ap pears that he has arranged for a duel willi a reporter of a London paper, the result of which is not stated. That a soldier who risked his life for his country in the hour of her peril should be sent to a county hos pital in the days of his infirmity is a discrace to the American nation. At Oakland. Cal., yesterday, an invalid (J A. It. man was sent to the count' iHpital. which so worked upon his feelings that he lulled himself in a few niinnlcs by firing a bullet into his bund. The men who helped to save the country in the days of their yonng manhood should, in their old age and helplessness, be tenderly cared for by the land they preserved. Kcclprocitj celcil. "What's thatr ;isked the Fourth stfroot belle, as he purloined a kiss from her. Thats free trade,' he replied. "And what's this?' she inquired as she kissel him in return. "Iteciprocity, I suppose.' "Well," she gurgled, "I guess we need reciprocity, don't we?' ( "That's what the nation wauls," he . said. WiUUnmtport Sun. ' Ella Wheeler licox recently honored Xarragansett Pier with herj presence. Her appearance in the surf led an impressionable young woman to draw this picture of her for a news-, paper: She looked a veritable Psyche, graceful, lithe and amber-tinted. , Poising for a dive on the edge of a Kreat rock, her plump white arms j pointed above her head, her lissom fonn outlined against the dark blue sky, a more graceftd poem does not oust in her whole collection than the self of Ella Wheeler Wilcox.
