OREGON: F1UDAY SEPTEMBER 5,1890 Sex years ago there ivere scarcely a hundred electric motors iu operation iu the United States for any purpose; to-day there are not less than 15,000 motors in use, applied to not less than two bnndrcd different industries, and an industrial revolution is taking place, equaling, it not surpassing, in importance that attending tbe intro duction of the steam engine, and mar velous in tbe rapidity of its growth. Connecticut is so well situated financially, tbat tbe state treasurer has notified the towns that tbe stale tax usually levied will not be called for this year. This indicates a pros perity -which is highly commendable to the thrift and economy of tbe "Nut meg State." Connecticut contracted a heavy war debt, and has constructed a maguificcnt state capitol at Hart ford, which is excelled by few states, yet it seems the debt has been canceled and the costly building paid for. Northwestern Industrial Exposition. This great attraction will soon open at Spokane Falls, and the manage ment have now turned their attention to the details of the Exposition and arc preparing an elaborate program, with special features for each day dating tbe Exposition. Tbe oration at the opening, October 1st, will be made by Ben Bntterworth, the Con gressman of Ohio, and Secretary of the MTorKTs Fair, one of the most elo quent and ablest speakers. His im pressions of tbe resources of this country will greatly determine the space and position tbat this section of the country will occupy at the "World's Fair. Tbe arrangements for the Grand Army day have all been completed. Thre will be a parade of all the vet erans, and literary and musical exer cises will be of the highest character and will have special reference to their organization. In tbe evening there will be a camp-fire and a space specially set apart for tbe use of the comrades; and it will be decorated with Chinese lanterns, and the "boys" will be entertained with refreshments, and where they can sing songs and tell stories to their hearts' content. T. V. Powderly has been invited to be present on Labor Day, when all the labor organizations of" this section or the country are expected to march m line with floats and allegorical tableaux. An athletic day has been set apart when the dffcrent athletic clubs of Spokane Falls will give an interesting exhibition, while a part of the day will be occupied by fancy bi cycle riding. Olympia will come to Spokane Falls thousands strong. They will hire a special train of ten or twelve coaches, and they will bring with them three car loads of fresh clams, which will be baked at the Exposition grounds and the visitors will be en tertained with an old-fashioned clam bake. The Governors of "Washington. Ore gon, Idaho and Montana have been iuvited to designate a certain day on which it will be convenient for them to be there with their staffs, and on those days they will be the guests of the city and special exercises will be held with reference to their respective states. There will be a childrens' day, a ladies day and other special features, which will make tbe visit to the Ex position doubly attractive. A Storj-ltooV Itomanco. From Stamford, Conn., comes the tale ol an inheritance which reads like the plot of an English sensa tional novel. A crippled music teacher of that place had by strictest economy saved, some thirty years ago, about $1,500. with which he intended to buy a home, for himself and his mother. He always kept the money beside his bed, and one night it was stolen. All search was unavailing, andllie poor fellow took up his work again with a weary heart. But the se quel of the tale is that not long since the music teacher, still poor and ob pcnro, received a letter from a man in Australia, whose name he had never heard, saying that he was on the point of death, that he had stolen the money, and so greatly had it thriven in his hands that he had massed a large fortune, all of which he had willed to the musician. Not long after the Australian was gathered to his forefathers and lawyers informed the musician that he had fallen heir to an estate worth over $20,000. The moral of the tale is whatever the render pleases. Wuou yon recall how sweetly fall Soft words from others on the mind, It is a reason best of all To bp yourself a little kind. One of the greatest luxuries thai this word affords is to hiss a hashfut girl who kisses back.
