An Interesting letter Prom Rnssian Tice Consul. tne has xi:.iiii,Y-iiEAcni:ii sirnnisx Ox Steamer "Orlando " North. Sea, Near Swedex, Aug. 7, 1890. Editor Asteriax: Thursday, July 17th, arrived in Cleveland, O. Took a train for Ashta bula, meeting Mr. Edwards, the pub lisher of the Finnish paper, receiving- kind hospitalities of him and family. Next morning, left for Buffalo, pass ing Erie at noon, observing tho place to be a great boiler manufacturing town. The farms along the road are well improved, with abundant corn crops. Buffalo was reached at 3 o'clock r. m., and having time to spare, I took a train for Niagara Falls, a place of great interest. Much has been written of this famous cataract and waterfalls, and as they are familiar to most readers, I will not attempt to describe them. However I will say that three suspension bridges are stretched across the river below the falls within one mile of each, other. Sunday morning July 20th, arrived in New York. In viewing tho city, after forty years' absence from it, I find it immensely great Had the pleasure of crossing the Brooklyn bridge. "Visiting the old cemetery surrounding the Trinity church on Broadway many antiquated head tones and monuments can baleen, in which I was more than interested. Jnst at the entrance, noticing the resting place of a naval commander of great distinction in many battles, Captain James Lawrence," of the United States navy, who fell on the 1st day of July, 1813, in an action be tween the frigates Chesapeake and Shannon, in the 32d year of his age. His last words to his com rades in battle were: "Don't give up the ship." Among mauy of the graves of emi nent men and women will be seen the grave of Alexander Hamilton, a great statesman at the time of the formation of the federal government who was killed by Aaron Burr Jnly 12, 1S01, at tho age of 47 years. Others of the early stones are of tho Revolutionary period, while others are still of more remoto dates from 1704 to 1G92, and many still of greater age, but time has scaled off the surface of the stones, so that tho names and dates are completely obliterated, tvhilo others are replaced in later years with the original inscriptions of tho former ones. Monuments are also erected to the memory of heroic firemen who had lost their lives in tho attempt of sav ing life and property in tho great fires. July 23d left New York on steamer iCity of Richmond, of tho Itiman line, but beforo leaving tho city I received a letter from Bnffalo with draft from the Lake Superior Transit Company, remitting 9.80 railroad fare that I was obliged to pay at Houghton to overtake the steamer Empire City at Sault ste Marie, a commendable promptness of tho com pany I should say the least, to redress any wrong or neglect that may hap pyi against passengers although it may occur to the company unin tentionally. . Wliildn sight of the city yet, the steamer Teutonic, of the "White Star line, passed us at a lively rate, and was ontf sight before night, and is said to arrive in Liverpool threo days ahead of us. In crossing the Atlantic thero is nothing particularly of interest to mention; rfew passing vessels, birds and fishes were occasionally seen. On Sunday, July 27th, religions services were held in tho forenoon. Capt Tassord, of the steamer, read the serv ices of the Episcopal church, with ex cellent singing by the passengers. A collection for tho aid of the Sea men's Orphanage and aged mariners of Liverpool was taken up. Nearing tho Irish coast wo had a strong northwesterly wind, with rain, the steamer rolling heavily to the pleasure and sport of some passengers and the inconvenience of others. On August 10th, in the evening, an excel lent concert and fine recitations were given and collection for the same ob ject as Snndav, with the good restdt of S45. August t2d, arrived off Queens town and transferred tho Irish passen gers on a tug without anchoring, and resumed our journey to Liverpool, reaching thero in about nineteen hours. Strolling over the city, espe cially about the docks and shipping, I find many changes made since the yearl&49. At one of the docks is moored an old-style 80-gun frigate, built in the year 1804, the sailors on board said. The ship had done some important service and is kept for the purpose of training the young men for sea service, and as a post of honor for exhibitions. August 5th took a train for Hull, reaching there in five hours, in the night time, and drove at once for the steamer bound for Gottenbnrg, Sweden. It might be well to mention that almost every half an hour be tween Liverpool and Hull we passed manufacturing towns about the size of Portland, and a majority of them still larger, and next morning, August 6th, started across the North Sea, and at the time of writing of this, on the 7th, we are having a strong wind, almost a gale. Comparing the quarters, and ac commodations on the steamer Or lando, of "Wilson & Son's line, they are far superior to those of the City of Richmond, on the Atlantic. "We are expecting to make Gotten burg to-morrow. Gustave "Wilson. Sonndin the Bay. The United States government sur vey boat Qidney, in command of Lieutenant Holm, is in Shoalwater bay making soundings in the interest of navigation. The vessel has a crew of thirty-eight men and will ply about in the bay for about two months yet. Lieutenant Helm is also provided with a small steam launch not much larger than a row boat, and with this he is able to go almost anywhere ho wants. Tho boat is very light draught and steams around in every nook and cor ner. "While tho crew was off duty for a couple of days last week, they got up a stag danco at North Cove and enjoyed themselves immensely. -Sunday Oregonian. Fish at 30 Cents Each on the Wharf and a Bit a, round in Jlarket. The swathy sons of Italy and Greece, who" employ the midnight hours by alluring the big salmon from their watery haunts, are doing so with very little pecuniary advantages to themselves jnst now. The causes which brought about this pecnliar t uation are varions. The canneries in this city along the Sacramento river have mostly only limited capacities and are at present unable to handle salmon on account of having large fruit orders to fill. They arc kept busy night and day in canning fruit of all kinds, and neces sarily must let fish business rest temporarily. Another cause for the fact that salmon are now a drug in the San Francisco market is that the fishermen on the Sacramento river formed a union early in the sea son, which is at outs with all the fac tories on the river, and the members ot that union refute to sell any fish to these canneries. Tney would rather bring their catches lo San Francisco and dispose of them at ridiculously low prices than let the river factories have a single salmon at much higher rates. Tho fight against these canuerymen is so bitter that not one of the fishers would hesitate to throw all the fish ho had gathered by a hard night's work overboard before he would allow the river factories to purchase them at any price. There is oue cannery in this city, which is the largest establishment of its kind in the world, and the only one on this coast which has a plant big enough to allow the cauning of salmon while the fruit season is at its height. This firm, A. Ln.sk Ar Co., has taken advantage of the existing state of affairs. Yesterday it commenced to buy salmon, a fact which somewhat relieved the pressure while it, however, has no tendency as t toward ad vancing the prices. Istdor Jacobs, tho president of the firm, was seen yesterday by a Chron icle reporter, and explained the situa tion by saying: uWe have concluded to take advantage of the low prices and the extra fine quality or this sea son's salmon, and to commence the canning of it earlier than usual. AVe are now consuming 30,000 pounds of fish daily, and will continue to do so until September 1st, when tho season will close for one month. We arc pay ing lAi conts a pound for salmon that nt other limes is easily wortho1 2 cents."' In tho up-town markets the' house holder pays a bit a pound for salmon. Down at the wharf he can buy a whole fish for 30 cents.-?. F. Chronicle, Si. Is Consumption iitrti ruble? Uead II u follewing: Mr. C II. The precision of diction which distinguishes the conversation here strikes the newcomer forcibly. Neither tho abbreviation of a word nor the elision of a letter is tolerated for an instant, under any stress whatever. The other night a lady was sufleriug presumably in gre.it torture. She was in the throes of that severe ret ribution which follows reckless enjoy ment of the wily cucumber. In the watches of the night she lenocked at the door next mine for admittance and medicine. Thero wasn't au apostrophe in her remarks. She clutched at the panels of the door with desperate touch, and implored between articu lated greans: "I beg that you will let me in immediately.
