MARINE NEWS AND NOTES.
The pilot schooner Governor
Moody 'was brought round from
Smith's point yesterday morning,
where she had been to have her hull
scraped and cleaned. Her repairs
will be finished by to-morrow or Tues
day, and she will be ready to go in
service at once.
The steamship City of Topeka ar
rived from Alaska and way ports yes
terday, bringing 6,091 cases salmon,
as follews: 3,014 from the Chilkat
Canning company, consigned to
Morgan & Sherman; 2,200 for Elmore,
Sanborn & Co., and 880 for B. A. Sea
borg.' The steamship State of California,
Captain H. S. Ackley, sailed for San
Francisco yesterday afternoon, taking
the following freight from here: 200
sacks of oysters, 90 bundles of shooks
and 34 crates of moss.
The steamship Oregon, Captain E.
Poleman, arrived from San Francisco
yesterday, bringing 82 tons of freight
for this iort, and 22 mnles for rail
road building at South Bend. She
had 74 cabin and 48 steerage pas
sengers. The schooner Webfoot left up the
river yesterday in tow of the No
Wonder. She will unload her red
wood lumber at the "Willamette mills,
Portland.
The British ship StratJiblane, CapL
Tuthill, which left up the river yester
day, drew 18.05 feet, and water front
men are impatiently awaiting the re
port of her trip. At tho highest tides
tho vessel can, it is thought, get
through all right, but old river men
predict that she will get into trouble
going over some of the many bars be
tween here and Portland.
The steamer Greyhound, Capt.
Claude Troup, found it a little too
rough for such a boat, and did not
venture over the bar, but returned to
this city last evening.
X LITTLE IIOUSEKEEPEU.
Work and" Responsibility of a Nine-Year-Old
CIrl.
How many have cried, says a writer
in the New York Star, over Charley
in "Bleak House," "Coaviness' "
orphan daughter, and the self-denying
way in which sho worked and sup
ported her still smaller brothers and
sisters! "Was there ever a case in
real life so pathetic?" readers, while
they wero crying, must have asked
and hoped that there never was.
Perhaps not; but there are some very
similar in this city of New York. I
rode down town in a Broadway car
yesterday afternoon, and opposite mo
sat a girl of nine, taking care of
her sister of six and her brother
of four. All three were neatly
dressed, and I was attracted by the
motherly way in which the older girl
looked after the others and tho affec
tion the- manifested for her. There
were no other passengers but myself
and them, and the conductor, noticing
my interest, said: "They have been to
the Central Park; they got aboard at
Seventh avenue nnd Fifty-ninth
street" "You don't mean to say," I
asked of the older girl, "that you" and
your brother and sister havo been to
tho park alone?" "Oh, ye3, sir," she
replied, "wo go 'most every Sunday.
Johnny and Mamio enjoy seeing the
animals and the boats, and there is no
one to tako them but me."
"Haven't you any parents?"
"Only father; he is tired Sundays
and can't go. Ho works hard all the
week."
It was none of my business, of
course; nnd in this great, rushing
city the rule is to let everybody take
care of himself if he can, and the
weakest be crushed in the strife. But
I could'nt help inquiring of the quiet
little miss how she lived.
She modestly told mo that her
mother was dead and that the chil
dren and their father lived in a flat
near Grand street; that she kept
house, got tho meals, took care of
everything, did all tho work except
the washing and ironing, which was
done by a woman, who came to tho
flat once a week. Isn't that a life?
This young thing acting as the
mother of her still younger
brother and sister and house
keeper for her father. Doing more
than many a grown woman does,
and doing it not only uncomplain
ingly but gladly, for her face lighted
up while she was telling mo her tale,
and she evidently took pride in her
capacity to "run things." Presently
we got to Grand street Off the seat
got the little housekeeper; then she
lifted Johnny off nnd led him to the
platform, followed by his sister. The
conductor carried Johnny to the side
walk. "Good-by," said we. "Good
by," said the children, and we parted
never to meet again probably. But I
shall often think, of them and wonder
how they are getting on in their
struggle with the world.

The colored population of Watson,
Ind., are greatly excited over the
strange story of Johnnie Bussell, aged
about 14 years, who ha3 been ill of
pneumonia for some time, and who, it
was thought, had died last "Wednes
day. On that day ho went into a
trance and gave every indication that
his life was at an end. Some of the
colored neighbors called and the body
was prepared for burial, but before
sending for a coffin one of the family
believed that ho detected signs of
life remaining, and finally convinced
others of tho fact. They awaited
developments, and in a few hours
tho supposed corpse began to grow
warm. Vigorous rubbing of the limb3
was resorted to with tho resnlt stated.
He awoke a3 suddenly and myste
riously as he seemed to have died, and
immediately made known that ho had
been in a trance, and while in this
state asserted that he had been con
verted and made a child of God, and
seems to tmnk that he must xireach
the gospel to the black race. Ho pre
dicts tornadoes and other calamities,
and says that for tho next three cen
turies tho earth will be visited with all
kinds of trouble, after which peace
will be restored. He is a bright lad,
and converses fluently on all subjects
relating to the Bible.

THE TWO 1"S5 P0PPF1S.
The Remarkable Resemblance Which They
. Rear to One Anothpr.
It will eviden tly be a long time before
that story can be told, but it will bo a
longer time before the Branch will see
more charming young ladies than it
has this summer. Among them are
two sisters, Mis3 Becky and Miss
Louise Popper. They have excited in
tense interest, not only by their
beauty, .but also because they are
twins. The sisters are about 19 years
old, just out of school, and aro as
fresh and attractive as violets in this
garden of full blo.wn roses. But de
mure and modest as they are in man
ner, the sisters have a keen sense of
humor, which they have been able to
indulge to a great " extent. In this
they are aided by the fact that they
areEo much alike that it is utterly
impossible even for friends to loll
them apart Their own parents ho
frequently mistake Becky for Louise
and Louise for Becky that they no
longer tako the trouble lo try Co dis
tinguish them.
"It never made any difference which
one was scolded," said one uf the girls
with a roguish laugh (I don't know
which one of them it was), "whenever
one of us did anything mamma did
not like, the one first seen was held re
sponsible." It does not do the young man any
good to single out one of these girls.
He is certain to be fooled. At the
proprietor's ball tho other night I
saw them in the lancers smile and
make a quick movement in the grand
change which escaped the attention of
all the others in the set I afterward
asked one of the sisters. Miss Becky I
think it was, what the movement
meant.
"Oh. we changed partners, that was
all," she replied. "We often do that.
They never know it"
The boy who keeps tally in the
bowling alley gave up trying to score
for the Popper girls last week. He
simply coidd not do it A young man
one day was bowling with a party of
young folks, of which Louise or Becky
was a member. He had never heard
of "her" sister. Suddenly he seemed
to be excited and nervously whispered
to the bowling alloy keeper, "Am I nil
right?' Ho kept glancing out of the
window and at Mass Louise (perhaps
it was she.) At hist ho could stand it
no longer.
"Excuse me, Miss Popper," ho ex
claimed, "bnt are you here or.ont
there, or am I going crazy?"
'Perhaps," replied Becky or Louise,
"you arc. 1 mnstgo now, for mamma
and my sister arc waiting ont3ide."
The beauty of these aggravating
young ladies mtikes their pranks all
the more discomfiting to the young
men, who never feel quite safe alout
continuing a broken conversation,
and finally lecomo convinced that
pointed attention from any young man
is impossible. I have myself seen
these girls during a promenade about
tho piazzas talk a minute together
and change escorts, and then continue
the promenade without the slightest
idea of the change entering the head
of the most devoted admirer.
In appearance tho Misses Popper
make one think of how Mrs. Lang
try must have looked at their age.
The lines of their faces arc perfect
and there is a freshness about
their complexions that belongs
only to youth nnd health. They are
brunettes of medium height and ex
quisite form. On no occasion do they
appear with any distinguishing mark
about their costumes, which are
always simple but most becom
ing. Even the ornaments in their hair
are alike and havo the same
relative position. The girls aro ab
solute counterparts of each other.
They were born in Salt Lake City-, but
were educated in New York, where
they now reside. Their father is a
very wealthy and retiring man, hav
ing an office in the metropolis, where
he manages his western mining inter
ests. The girls have been greatly ad
mired here, and Long Branch wishes
them eqnal success in Saratoga.
