w ASTORIA. OREGON: SUNDAY AUGUST 31. 18CO It is to ba hoped that the breach between the board of school directors and Superintendent Shively will be bridged. The connty cannot afford to have discord in this department of tho government. Yestebday, and tho night before, the stormy Atlantic was aroused, and swopt along the beach at Ashbury Park, X. J., with terrific force, tearing away land, wharves and pier, and do ing considerable damage. Fastest: is feared in Ireland, and stops are being taken to arrange for the relief of the people of the Emer ald Isle in case of the failure of the potato crop, which will be sure to cause a famine among the peasantry. Olatsop can evidently lay good clnini to the honor of being the banner county in regard to paying up taxes. The assessment roll called for over Sr,O0Q. The return of the sheriff, aftor deducting the amount of errors and deficiency in sales, etc, leaves a delinquent list that figures up only SlJOO. It would seem that a leper con signed to a lonely existence on a quarantined island would not have spunk enough to rebel against any thing, but the attack on the superin tendent of the leper colony at Mo lokai, in the Hawaiian islands, proves that to all men their home is dear, even though it be a living tomb. IvroriKDiKG one of the old song, "A Hundred Fathoms Deep,' is a tele gram announcing that the wreck of tho ship Jirothcr Jonathan has been discovered off Crescent City, Cal., in a hundred fathoms of water. The ves sel was lost twenty-five years ago, bnt at such a depth of water it will be dif ficult to recover the vast amount of treasure wh'ch the wreck is supposed to contain. "rcGiuty'' will be likely to keep it with him at "tho bottom of the sea." Some miscreants nttcmritcd to wreck a passenger traiu on the Southern Pa cific, in Tehama county, California, early yesterday morning, as it was coming down from Oregon. The en gine struck an obstruction, jumped the track and turned over on one side. The baggage car was ditched, but the sleapars and passenger coaches did not leave the track. No one was seriously injured, but it was a narrow escape It is hoped the villains will be captured and properly punished. Down goes the enrtaiu at the close V. of another act in the work of the gov ernment jetty at the mouth of the Columbia river, which stopped last eveuing for want of money. If some of the long-winded discussions on the tariff bill had been left out entirely, Congress might ere th's have passed the river and harbor bill and the ap propriation therem cont?;ned would have continued without interruption the grand work which is a benefit, not only to the whole northwest, but to the entire civilized world whose commerce ;s so often represented bore. Tnc Aberdeen Herald says: All of southwestern "Wasb'ugton is in favor of the capital remaiuiug at Olympia. because of the situation of Olympia as regards that portion of the state and all other portions. Those in favor of a change have never attempted to ad vance nuy reasons wiry it should be made. Othor things being equal, and the situation of Olympia is the best that can be found, many of the historic associations of the state cling round the old capital aud should not be ruthlessly destroyed by a few real es tate boomers who want the change made to increase the value of their town lots. The Fastest Torpedo Boat New Your, Aug. 20. A dispatch from "Washington says, that according to the Journal, published by the So ciety of Naval Engineers for the cur rent quarter, tho fastest torpedo boat extant is a 1;ttle torpedo dispatch boat built after the new type introduced by Schicherau, of Germany, for the Eus sian government She is similar in principle to the Italian boats Aqutla, mblio and Falko. Tho hull is 152 feet seven inches long, seven teen feet beam, and about 150 tons displacement. The engines are twin screws, tripplo ex pansion, of about 2,300 indicated Lorse iower. There are two loco- inotivo boilers. It is officially re ported that she made a mean speed during six runs over a measured mile, of 27.-1 knots. This beats the best record of our little dishing, and all tho Spanish boats which have hith to taken tho lead in point of speed, and makes the Russian government possessor of tho fastest littlo craft in the world. A BcarAmoiis the Water-Drinkers. An unusual sensation was enjoyed on Saturday by the visitors to Zel efctvo, one of the spas in Hungary. Whiie some forty water-drinkers were sauntering on tho promenade, a wild bear suddenly appeared on the scene, dragging a sheep, which it had stolen. As the visitors tied and not one had the idea of returning with a gun, the bear took possession of tho promenade, and, having probably refuted the theory that his species live on a vege table diet, strolled back quietly to his home in the mountains. Unseen "Worlds. One of the latest achievements of astronomy is the discovery that Mizar, the central star of the three forming the handle of the great dipper, is not only a double as has long been known but that the principal com ponent has a second companion which the telescope has never revealed. Several photographs of the spectrum of the principal star have been taken at the Harvard observatory since 1887, and a study of these has disclosed the curious fact that the most dis tinct one of tho photographed dark lines undergoes a process of doubling at regular intervals of fifty-two days. This is explained by Professor Pick ering by the supposition that the chief star Mizar is itself a double, having components revolving around their common centre of gravity in 101 days, the lines in the spectrum of the two stars being displaced in opposite directions when one star is moving toward and the other away from the earth, and coinciding when the stars are in conjunction. The rate of motion is estimated to be 100 miles a second, and the two bodies are separated by a distance of 130,000,000 miles, though in the most powerful telescope they appear as one star. If the calcu lations are correct, second magnitude Mizar has forty times tho mass of our sun. A similar investigation at the Potsdam observatory has confirmed the belief that the variable brightness of the star Algol, in the head of Me dusa, is due to passage behind a dark body. This star shines steadily for two and one-half days, then with re duced brilliancy for four and .one-half hours, the changes taking place with great regularity. Photographs of tho spectrum now show that the lines are displaced in one direc tion when the star is at its weakest, and in the opposite direction after that moment, as would occur were tho star alternately approaching and re ceding from the earth in revolutions in and a bit around some unknown ob ject Calculations show that the bright star and its dark companion must be of nearly equal size, with a total mass about two-thirds that of our sun, and separated by less than 3,000,000 miles. It is a unique and not easily conceived fact that a hot sun should have so near a cooled moon of nearly its own size.
