The berry season is almost over. For over seven weeks the yield of both blackberries and raspberries has been so great that one might pick until tired ont without exhausting the supply. Something less than 400 St Helen ites got their mouths puckered up for a ride to Astoria on the excursion Sunday, which was advertised to stop here, but didn't stop. A representa tive of the Jlist was on hand with the rest, but after careful consideration concluded to postpone the trip until walking was good. A new company has recently been organized at Kalama, by the name of thelvalama Boom company, for the purpose of putting in a boom at the mouth of the Kalama river to catch the great quantity of logs that always come down during a freshet. This will be very advantageous to the log ging industry on the Kalama river, a3 it is a known fact that the magnifi cent fir and cedar timber which is abundant along its banks has hereto fore not been as properly worked as it might have been had these im provements been added long since. The sturgeon business is at its height. There is a great run in the river now, and the fishermen are going after them, as there is a good demand from the east, where the stur geon crop has been short this season. There are many varieties of hooks nsed in fishing for sturgeon. The needle-hook, without barbs, intro duced by the Chinese, are going out of fashion. Strange to say, most of the sturgeon are caught without bait. The only killing bait is eels, which cost So a barrel, and so the fishermen prefer to set lines with hooks arrauged along them and suspended abovo the bottom so that the sturgeon get hooked accidentally. Miss'Abbott, a daughter of Mr. A. Abbott, of Bachelors' islaud, came near losing her life last week. She went to Portland, Friday, to have a tooth extracted. She experienced no more uneasiness immediately there after than is usually the case, but in about an hour it commenced to bleed. She was taken home, and as the blood continued to flow, regardless of at ntempts to stop it, her parents became alarmed, and brought her to St. Helens for treatment. The How was finally stopped after having been con tinual for twenty-four hours, by which time she was unable to walk. However, she has, we take pleasure in stating, nearly recovered from tho effects. A new logging camp is being start ed near Downing's landing by John Parker, of that place, and James Win chester, of Cowlitz county. These gentlemen have bought a quarter sec tion of lino timber of J. A. Atkins, for S2,000, which together with the ad joining quarter section owned bj-Mr. Parker will give them ample material for many years. Skid roads are al ready being pnt in and a chute to Perrine slough, abovo Major Binear son's landing, will soon bo built. They aro both experienced loggers, and their being so near the river and hav ing access to so fine a body of timber ought to enable them to make a big output Oregon Mist. SALMON TIPS. In regard to S. Schmidt not packing sturgeon at Cathlamet this season we aro in receipt of the following letter from the firm: "In regard to packing fish at Astoria wo might open a branch there, but will pack at Cathlamet also." Hapgood & Co. are making prepara tions to largely increase the capacity of their cannery. A retort soldering machines and an electric light plant are among the contemplated improve ments. These additions to the work ing plant will increase the capacity fully one-third. This will be the first cannery on the river lighted with elec tricity. T. K. Johnson has recently returned from a trip to "Willow Bar, five miles above St. Helens, where he intends to seine next year. Mr. Johnson says tins is one of the best natural seining grounds onv tho Columbia river, and will go up with his steamer in a couple of weeks and take out some snags. He will still retain his Tenas Hlahe grounds and fish both of them next season Cathlamet Gazette. MARINE NEWS AND NOTES. The British ship Strathblane has lightered 45X1 tons window glass, and will start for Portland sometime to day to finish unloading and take in grain for the United Kingdom. The pilot schooner Oo cernor Moody, which has been on the ways at Smith's Point for several days past, was taken off at high tide last night and will bo brought up to this city this morning. It is expected that the vessel will be ready for sea by the early part of next week. Coming from the Beach. There are more ducks in the Chi nese Empire, says an authority, than in all the" world outside of it. They are kept bv the Celestials on every farm, on the private roads, on the pub lic roads, on streets of cities, and on i all the lakes, ponds, rivers, streams andjbrooks in the count ry. Every, Chinese boat also contains a batch of them. There are innumerable hatch-1 ing establishments all through the ' empire, many of which arc said to turn out about 50,000 young ducks every year. Salted and smoked duck and ducks' eggs constitute two of the , most common and important articles of diet in China. Licet pool Courier. ( BETTER THAN GOLD. RESTORED HER HEALTH.
