LOGAN &' E "With the establishment of the free postal deliver-, which is now assured, another milestone in the progress of this city is marked. By and by the railroad will be built and then Astoria will get in the front row of cities of the Northwest, and hurrah. It is highly complimentary to the postal system to have a representative of tlie British government sent to New York to endeavor to gain useful hints whereby their own postal system may be improved. But England is con stantly improving from observations made in this couutry. The telegrams announce that Chi nese are again using the underground railroad from British Columbia into the United States, and boast of the fact. Some lime ago it was reported travel on this line had been stopped, but nobody believed it, and news from the front confirms the disbelief. Sojie people entertain queer ideas of love. A lieutenant in the Austrian army was troubled because his young ladylove was taken away by her parents. It affected his mind to such an extent, that as ho could not marry her. life had no more charms for him, so he shot her through the head, then shot himself, and the lovers who could not be united in life were wedded in death. WnTTE-wrxGED peace is reported to have spread her wiugs over San Salvador and Guatemala. This much desired state of affairs was brought about by United States Minister Mizucr and he is to be congratulated, but the chances "are that the treaty will bo riddled by the bullets of re volutionists within a short time, as it is not in the nature of the inhabitants or those countries to be at peace for more than a week or two. RAILWAY NOTES. Railway building began in Japan twenty years ago. There are now 579 miles of line in operation. A marine railway twenty-live miles in length, connecting the Gulf of St Lawrence with the Bay of Fuudy across the Isthmus ot Chignecto, is in process ot construction. All the grades ot tho New York, Pennsylvania fc Ohio, western divis ion, are to be reduced to twenty-sis feet to the mile. Some of the grades in this division are now forty-seven feet grade. Siain, it is said, is feeliug the im pulse of the railway spirit, and is taking the preliminary steps for build ing several hundred miles of lines. Siani has a population of nearly G,000, 000 people and an area of abont 280, 500 square miles. A railroad is to be built from Arch angel to Vologda to unite the extreme habitable north of the Russian empire with the interior. The contractors are merchants ot Vologda, who carry on a large business with the natives of Archangel. The Railway Age says: The Atchi son system is not only by 1,500 miles or more tlie greatest railway system in point of mileage in the world, but its lines lie in a greater number of geo graphical divisions of America than any other country namely, in thir teen of the states and territories. Ghimneys. to be safe from lire and draw well, should not be less than sixteen inches square inside and built up from the cellar. Use good brick with clay, instead of mortar, up to the comb. Piaster it inside with clay mixed with salt Top with the best brick, well wet aud laid in cement Do not let wood come too close to the brick, and don't let the stovepipe come nearer than eighteen inches to the ceiling. -It is a fact," that Hood's Sarsaparilla does cure scrofula, salt rheum, and other diseases or affections arising from im pure state or low condition of the blood, overcomes the tired feeling, creates a good appetite, and gives strength to every part of the system.
