BURT'S LAKE.
A Sheet of Water Serea Milts Lcni ia the
Yellowstone Park.
Tho west fork of Itosebud creek
rises in tho Yellowstone range, and
has always been considered the ontlet
of a lakeJ There are three small lakes
'way up in the mountains, rather
a spreading out of the stream, shallow
and marshy, but they are not the
source of "the west fork Charles
Burt, a young horseman and trailer,
claims the discovery of the head of
the west fork. He was out with
Brown's survey party for two months,
as packer and hunter (and by the
way, he took Brown's horses for the
pay when the survey was
abandoned,) and being in the
vicinity of the head of the west
fork, determined to do a little explora
tion on his own account. He had
heard from the Indians about a big
lake at the head of the stream, and
with this knowledge to work on and
his own familiarity with the lay of the
country, the task was not so diflicult.
Providing liimself with a saddle horse
and pack animal he made his way into
the wilderness with such speed as was
possible and toward evening, having
left the small lakes behind,, was
brought to a stop by a frowning preci
pice, which towered up fully 100
feet above him. Over the wall of rock
in unbroken volume, flowed a sheet
of water, one continuous fall of nearly
100 hundred feet. He was not greatly
surprised at this sight, as the Indians
had previously informed him of the
existence of the grand fall. Making a
camp at the foot of the falls and leav
ing his horses, this intrepid young ex
plorer set out upon the apparently
hopeless task of finding a pass by
which he could reach the elevation
above, where he confidently expected
to find the object he sought the
lake. After a hard and perilious
climb he reached the .top of the
cliff, and then in the last rays of set
ting sun his delighted eyes feasted
upon a beautiful lake, apparently a
mile wide and, as near as he could es-1
timate, seven miles long, perched
on a mountain top and bounded by
grassy slopes and pebbly beach.
rm. 1 -t 1 rt
xue approacinug uarKness warneti
him of tho dangerous path he must
traverse to reach camp and he
humped himself, reaching tho foot of
the cliff in safety and jubilant over
the successful ending of his quest. Ho
will visit that section again beforo
long and spy out a way to get to the
lake with pack horses. Very few In
dians have knowledge of this lake,
and Charloy Bnrt is nndoubteHly the
first white man who ever reached it or
observed it. It shonld be called
Burt's Lake, as it is his by right of
discovery.

Kcvival of the "Wlialins Towns.
An interesting and gratifying dis-
closure of the census is tuat ot tue re
vival nf tlm old whalinir towns. The
whale-fishery centers, where once the ;
coming and going of busy ships gavo ,
a lively air of industry to the wharves
and streets, felt the decadence ot tliis
lishery as an almost fatal blow, and in
the decades immediately succeeding
the fifties remained sorrowftd monu
ments to a grand industry's decay.
Now,however,they seem to be recover
ing their old-time energy, and it is not
ainlikelj that an inheritance of the
same enterprise which characterized
them in tho past will once more push
them steadily forward. New Bedford,
formerly the greatest whaling port on '
the whole coast, now boasts a jopu
latiou of 41,011, again of more than
50 per cent, since 1SS0, ami New Lon
don, the second port in importance",
has gained some 30 per cent, or more
in the same time.
