That which comes easily is not re garded with the same favor nor held in similar esteem to that which is more difficult to secure, even though both have equal value for the results sought And so it is with natural gas lor fuel purposes. Thousands o mil lions of cubic feet were worse than wasted; prodigality was the rule in its use; in fact, forming an opinion from the practices of those who supplied it and those who used it, the idea was to see which could outdo the other in recklessness. It seemed as if both suppliers and users had joined in the bdief that there could be no end to the good thing tbat was thrown out in vast volumes from Nature's store house. The chauge came, however, and with it the lime for paying up lor past transgressions. Veakeuing pressures and diminished volume aroused the suppliers, who, with as much intemperance in their schemes for metering and increased payments as formerly characterized their lavish ness and wastefulness, awoke to the fact that to keep in the swim they must regulate the How of the tide. Their regulations grew so 4'prouounced' that the price was finally placed at a point where tbe larger manufacturing concerns "looked lvickward" at their old servant, coal, which, it would seem, is again in a fair way to assume its sway in Pitts burg. While we do not wish to be understood as saying that "King CoaP is to at once regain his su premacy in the "Smoky City," it is nevertheless true that his return is certain, although the immediate rate of progress may be slow. These remarks were brought ont by advices received the other day from Pittsburg, to the following effect: "The Penn sylvania Tube Company is preparing to turn to the use of coal for fuel pur poses. At the present time thirteen regenerator gas-producer furnaces are being put in the works by the Smy the & Langhlin company, some of which will be ready to use in about thirty days. The company has had this in contemplation ever since the price of natural gas began lo go upward, or to the point where it was a question whether its use was more economical than that of coal. Slack coal will Ih used for makiug gas in the regenerators. This is the first in dustrial institution in Pittsburg to aiinndon natural gas entirely and lo start to using manufactured gas for fuel purposes. Some other firms havo the question under consideration." ; In the meantime there can be no doubt that the makers of artificial gas are under great obliga tions lo the suppliers of natural gas. ' in that the prodigality of the latter ' WEST taught the honskecpers of the natural . Kas districts much in respect to the , intrinsic merits of gas as a domestic i aid. And it may be accepted as an I assured met urn wncn nature s pro duce gives out, the artiGcial gas mau nlactnrer will have rich fields lo glean in. fis Laid Out by H. F, L. Daring the calendar year 1SS9 the production of pig-iron by Great Britain, which has annually produced more pig-iron than any other country, is shown by official statistics to have been 9,321, 553 tons of 2,009 pounds. It will be seen from these figures that the quan tity of pig-iron produced in the United States during the census year 1S90 was 25S1G Ions in excess of" the production of Great Britain during the calendar year 1SS9. No statistics are available for the output of pig iron by Great Britain during the twelve months ended June SO, 1890, so that comparisons cannot be made for the same period as that covered by the census statistics. Govekxos FEcnr, of Washington, issued a proclamation on August 25th convening the Legislature in extra session on "Wednesday, September 3d, at noon, for the purpose of enacting a legislative apportionment law. It is not expected that the session will be longer than ten days. The only busi ness to be disposed of is the enact ment of an apportionment bill to pro vide for the re-districting of the State into senatorial districts. There will probably be several bills presented embodying different schemes for re districting, which may require scv oral davs to harmonize.
