The Chico Fair.
Special to The Astorian.!
Cnico, Aug. 26. The eleventh an
nual exhibition opened here to-day.
The weather is all that could be asked
for, and there are large crowds of peo
ple in town.
JLast night everything presented a
lively sight Games of all kinds were
in full operation, wliilemen interested
in the races could be se'en congregated
on the street corners discussing that
one subject, "the races." The track
is said to be in fine condition, and a
great week's racing is looked forward
to. The exhibits at the fair grounds
are first class, far surpassing any here
tofore. Two Claims for Alaska.
According to the statements of
Lieutenant Schwatka, the well-known
Arctic explorer, the river Yukon is
the largest stream on the continent.
It certainly is not the longest The
Mississippi is many hundred miles
longer than the Yukon. But the
volume of water flowing in the latter
river is held to., be greater than
that flowing in the Mississippi. Lieu
tenant Schwatka went to tho sources
of tho Yukon, or claims that he did,
and found the distance to tho mouth
to bo 2,045 miles. He estimated the
month to be ninety miles wide,
and found that a thousand
miles from its month the
stream was fifteen miles wide. The
case is not quite made out for tho
Yukon. This enormous width is not
all deep water. Besides tho numer
ous islauds there are shoals and sand
bars which impede navigation. The
measurement of tho volume flowing at
tho mouth of the Yukon would settle
tho question whether it is tho largest
river on the continent No scientific
measurement has ever been made.
The estimated flow is littlo better than
guess work. There is, however, some
gronnd for believing Schwatka's state
ment that tho Yukon is the largest
river on this continent may turn out
to bo correct
This explorer found tho river full of
salmon, and after ascending 1,900
miles from the mouth, ho found the
salmon so abundant that he ailirmcd
"they blocked tho passago up tho
stream and wo could have crossed on
their backs." It is hoped that this i3
not an old-fashioned fish story, but
one that is to be taken with some
grains of allowance. Ho found that
millions of salmon die and aro cast on
tho banks annually. This nofablo
statement is also made: "Along the
shore I discovered a rich deposit of
black sand, that has since been
worked for gold and has brought as
much as 150 per ton. Parties who
have gone there smco wero disap
pointed in not being nblo to work the
sand. It had been covered with a
layer of dead fish, the oil from which
prevented the action of tho mercury."
It is well known that most of the
miners on tho Yukon havo hard luck,
but none of them ever ascribed their
ill-fortune to the layers of dead fish
along the margin or tho river. Tho
short seasons and the difficulty of get
ting stores up tho river weic the prin
cipal drawbacks. At present most of
tho salmon fisheries aro not on tho
Yukon, but are located along the bays
and inlets.
Lieutenant Schwatka claims that
not only has Alaska the largest river
on the continent, but that it has also
the highest mountain Mount St.
Elias being 19.S00 feet high. While
the estimate of height has been re
duced somewhat by subsequent ex
plorers, it still remains true that this
mountain is the highest on tho conti
nent Schwatka only ascended 11,000
feet It is not probable that the top
of this mountain will ever be reached
by any explorer, since for more than
9,000 feet it is covered with eternal
snow and ice. While the claim is
fairly well made out that Alaska has
tho largest river and the highest
mountain on the continent, it
is not so clear how these
physical phenomena are to be
turned to much practical account
Mount St Elias has a field of ice
around its base of from forty to sixty
miles in breadth. The Yukon is one
of tho most difficult rivers to navigate;
as far as is known the country back
from the margin of the upper waters
is one impenetrable, frozen swamp.
At some future time, when salmon
become scarce along the shores of the
mainland, fishermen may establish
stations 1,500 miles up the Yukon. In
the mean time most people must be
content with the fact that the late
Secretary Seward, on tho part of tho
government, bought tho largest river
and the highest mountain on the con
tinent. & Francisco Bulletin.

tatned the best counsel that I could
find, but it availed nothing. Of
course we appealed, but the supreme
court put their seal oC approval upon
the finding of the lower tribunal. One
of the particularly curious things
about the matter was that the child
was represented by a female lawyer,
comparatively young aud very at
tractive and entertaining.
"Now the entire plant, mortgaged as
it was, was worth only about 30,000;
so when the judgment had been satis
fied and other coats aud charges had
been paid, I found myself in very
tightened circumstances.
"Now comes tlie curious part of the
story. The femalo lawyer short ly
after the case had been finally settled
adopted the boy. Sharp tricks, eh?
Well, mine was sharper. Six months
afterl met the lady at a reception. I
must confess that her charms com
pletely captured me, and I was not
long in discovering that I was in love.
Certain circumstances, which I need
not mention, led me to at least hope
that my feelings were reciprocated.
I lost no time in proposing, and to my
infinite delight was accepted. We
were married about eighteen montlis
after the trial, and you can rest as

his auditors and smiled knowingly.
