The cruiser tsan jjrancisco sauea tor Santa Barbara channel at 1 o'clock tliis afternoon, where she -will make her official trial trip. As the San Francisco steamed slowly down the bay, she was saluted by the shipping in harbor. Flags were dipped and the SprecTcles tug gave the handsome ship a royal send off. From the brazen throats of their steam whistles the answer responded with her sonorous siren and as she proceeded along the water-front the noise became deafening. The ferry boats took up the signal and hats and handkerchiefs were waved from the shore and steamers. . A little further up the "Bed Fun nel" tugs joined in the jollification and away sped the cruiser through tho Golden Gate, carrying with her the good wishes of all in her trial against time. The March of a Generation of Roys and GirR A generation on the march from tho cradle to the gravo is an instructive spectacle, and wo havo it carefully presented to us in a report of Dr. Parr. Letustraco the physical for tune which any million of us may reasonably expect. Tho number, to begin with, isTiiado up of 511,7-15 boys and -iSS,255 girls, a disproportion which, by and by, will bo reversed by tho nnduo mortality of the boys and will be reversed before the close of this strange eventful history. More than a quarter of these children will die be fore they aro five years"- old in exact numbers, l-il,3S7 boys sind 121,795 girls. Tho two sexes aro now nearly on a level. The next five years will be much less fatal. In the succeeding flvo years from 10 to 15 tho mortal ity will bo still farther reduced. In deed, for both sexes this is tho most healthy period of life; tho death rate, however, is lower for boys than girls. There will be some advanco in deaths in tho next live years, and still more in tho fivo that follow, but 031,015 will certainly enter on their 2Gth year. Peforo the next ten years are at an end two-thirds of the women will havo married. Tho deaths during that per iod will bo G2,053, and of these no fewer than 27,12-1 will bo caused by consumption. Between 35 and 45 a still larger "death loll" will be paid, and littlo more than half tho original band in exact numbers 502,915 will enter on their 4Gth year. Each succeeding decado up to 75 will now become more fatal and tho numbers will shrink terribly. At 75 only 161,12-1 will remain to bo struck down, and of these 122,559 will have perished by tho .85th year of the march. The 32,565 that remain will soou lay down their burdens, but 2,153 of them will struggle on to 95 and 223 to bo 100 years old. Finally, in the 103th year tho last life will flicker out. Such is tho average lot of a million men and women, London Wit and Wisdom. DISCUSSING DROWNING. Keep Your Breath and Your Head are the 31nln Points. The New York Times in some "hints on drowning" says: "Keep your breath" is, of course, the best advice to peoplo who won't be advised not to trifle with tho liquid which both floats and strangles. The next best advice is: "Keep your head." If in threatening circumstances, think. If you aro swimming in the breakers, reflect that tho approaching wave, which suddenly looks so high, will certainly lift you to its height before the foamy comber breaks about your ears. And when the pass ing wave sinks beneath your falling body, have no fear that you will be swallowed in the watery abyss. Noth ing more exhausts an ocean swimmer than useless efforts to climb an ap proaching mountain of water, or to float downward more slowly than the receding wave. The water will float very nearly all women and most men in snch a position that they can breathe if the limbs are allowed to sink. Bnt the arms can only be thrust higher than the head at the cost of submerging tho nose. In ex actly tho same way, if one edge of a lifo preserver be depressed its mass will turn as on a pivot and the opposite edge will rise without giving much increase of floating power. Just as nearly the whole body must bo submerged to ele vate tho nose, so a life preserver must be wholly depressed to give its great est floating power. Thoreforo a plank or log should bo grasped at its middle and not at its end, but, on tho other hand, a boat should bo seized at the stern instead of the middle, unless the object bo to roll its gunwales under and fill it Startling Dlscorerr. The discovery by the inhabitants of a locality hitherto unvisited by the pestilent scourge of fever and ague, that it exists in their very midst. Is decidedly startling. Such discoveries are made at every season, in every part of the Union. Subsequently, when it is ascertained, as it invariably is at such times, through the valuable experience of someone who has been benefitted and cured, that Hostctter's Stomach Bitters is a thoroughly eflicacious cradicator of the malarial poison, and a means of fortifying the system against it. a feeling of mora se curity and tranquillity reigns throughout the whole neighborhood. Besides the febrile forms of malarial disease, dumb ague and ague cake are removed by the potent action of the Bitters, to which science also gives its sanction as a remedy for rheumatism, dy- spepia. constipation, liver complaint, de- uiiity. Kiuney trouDies. ami an diseases im pairing the organs of digestion and assimi lation. Jjeiguam Uourt, btratham, near London, comprising sixty-six acres, has just been sold for 20,000. It was for many years the residence of tho late M. J. Treadwell, a railway con tractor who began lifo as a navvy. His widow still preserves tho pick and shovel with which he worked as a laborer. TIMP ! GREED OF A BIG HOUSE. ! - s How It Absorbs Income, Happiness. Comfort and There was a story in the newspapers the other day about a Massachusetts minister who resigned his charge because some one had given his parish a fino house, and his "parishioners wanted him to live in it. His salary was too small, he said, to admit of his living in a big house, aud he wonld not do it. He was even deaf to the proposal that he should share the proposed tenement with the sewing societies and clubs of his church, and when tho mat ter came up to a serions issue, he ! relinquished his charge and sought a new neiu ot usefulness, xue situation was an amusing instance of the em barrassment of riches. Let no one to whom restricted quarters may have grown irksome, and who coveU larger dimensions of shelter, be loo hnsty in deciding that the minister was wrom Did you ever see the hoiue that Hav, -thorne lived in at Lenox? Did you ever see Emerson's house at Concord? They are good houses for Americans to know and remember. They per mitted thought. A big house is one of tho greediest cormorants which can light upon a lit tle income. Backs may go threadbare and stomachs may worry along on in different fillings', but a house will have things, though its occupants go without. It is rarely complete, and constantly tempts tho imagination to fliohts iii brick and dreams in lath and plaster. It develops annual thirsts for paint mid wall-paper; the J plumbing in it must bo kept in order , on pain of ucatu. whatever price is put on coal it has to be heated in win ter; and if it is rural or subnrbau, the grass about it must be cut even though funerals in the family have to be put off for the mowing. If the ten ants are not rich enough to hire peo ple to keep their house clean they must do it themselves, for there is no excuse that will pass among house keepers for a dirty house. The master of a house too big for him may expect to spend the leisure which might be made intellectually or spiritually pro fitable in acquiring and putting into practice fag ends of the arts of the j plumber, tho bell-ringer, tho lcek-1 smitli, the gasfitter and the carpenter. Presently ho will know how to do everything that can no done m the house except enjoy himself. Tie will learn about taxes, too, and water rates, aud how such abominations as sowers or new pavements are alwavs liable to accrue at his expense. As for the mistress, she will be a slave to carpets and curtains, wall-paper, painters, and women who come in by the day to clean. Sho will be lucky ( if she gets a chance to say her prayers and thrice and Tour times happy when she can read a book or visit with her friends. To live in a big house may I be a luxury, provided that one has a full set of money and an enthusiastic housekeeper in one's family, but lo j scrimp in a big house is a miserable business. Yet such is human folly, that for a man to refuse to live in ji house because it is o big for him is such an exceptional exhibition of sense that it beconits.tho favorite par agraph of a day in the newspapers.
