Fbem: Baltimore comes over the
"wires the announcement of an attempt
by a young woman to poison her
mother, brothers and visiting friends,
on account of a difficulty or quarrel
with her mother. Olds is a case of re
venge which, thanks to humanity, is
seldom recorded.
Judging from the number of voters
and other statistics, the San Francisco
Examiner justly concludes that the
late census in Oregon has been far
from correct, and the population of
the state has been underestimated.
The paper believes that Oregon should
surely have two representatives in
congress, and that if the new census
allowes but one, that the state will be
wronged. Good for the Examiner.
Anothek long life has suddenly
closed and a prominent man has
passed away. Yesterday morning at
Cleveland, Ohio, J. H. Wade died at
the age of 79 years, having been sick
but three days. Ho was a man of
great wealth and was very liberal, be
ing known favorably as a philan
thropist and a benevolent, public
spirited citizen, ready at all times to
help suffering humanity, and forward
any good work. He was formerly
president of the Western Union tele
graph company, and has been a rail
road president
The strike of the members of the
Knights of Labor who are employed
on the New York Central railroad is
causing great inconvenience to passen
gor travel and freight traffic. Trains
are tied up all along tho road from
New York city to Buffalo, and each
side is very stubborn. The road in
teuds to win if it takes a million dol
lars, and the strikers are also obsti
nate and determined to force tho road
to terms. Failing in this, they
threaten to forco other roads into
a similar trouble. Tho effects are
widespread, even tho Pacific coast be
ing affected by delays in freight.

An impecunious young fellow who
lives down town wanted a drink of
liquor the other day but was dead
broke. Ho found two flasks, one of
which he filled with water, and saun
tered into a Main street saloon to get
some whisky. Entering the bar
room he drew from his pocket tho
empty flask and called for a pint of
corn whisky. The barkeeper filled
tho flask and handed it to him. Mike
put it in his pocket and said: "I'll
settle for this on Saturday." "No
sir," rejoined the barkeeper, " we do
a cash business, and we must have the
money or liquor.' "Well, take your
liquor,' and he pulled out tho flask
containing tho water and handed it
to him. The barkeeper poured tho
contents into the barrel, while Mike
walked with a pint of whisky under

An Umbrella Incident.
"When the shower came up yester
day a certain pedestrian whoso jaw
showed great determination, took re
fuge in a doorway on Monroe avenue.
He allowed numbers of pedestrians
with umbrellas to pass him, but pretty
wion the right sort of a man came
along and he stepped boldly out, ex
tended his arm, and said:
"Ah! you thief, but l'vo run you
down at last! Give me my prop
erty!" "Yes ah yes!" stammered tho
other, as he surrendered it.
The man with the prominent jaw
walked up tho avenue as if nothing
had happened, while the other skipped
for the vacated doorway.
"Was it his?" queried one who wit
nessed the performance.
"That's what worries me," replied
the other. "I'm trying to think where

THE MOTIVE TOWER OF THE FUTURE.
Electricians of New York recently
found much food for speculation in
the remark said to have been made by
nenry Yillard just before he sailed
for Europe, that it would be well to go
cautiously in respect to certain ex
Ienditurcs for locomotives, because it
was probable that within a few years
the locomotive power of every railroad
in tho United States would be changed.
Another version of tho story is that,
being approached by a man interested
in the development of a new electrical
discovery, Mr. Yillard declared, after
having examined tho same, that this
country is on the verge of a great me
chanical and industrial revolution, so
great, in fact, as to do away with
btenm as a manufacturing and motive
