Or importance to Astoria is the Pacific Coast board of Commerce, which meots iu San Francisco on the 17th. ot next month. The topics .arc of general interest and local import ance, and our Astoria Chamber of Commerce should be fittingly repre sented. Great good is resultant from such meetings and among the sub jects to be discussed are several of vital intorcst to Astoria. The im provement and defense ot Pacific coast harbors; American commerce; the World's fair at Chicago, and other measures, -will come up and concert of action in those matters -will insure an enlarged degree of success denied local effort. Astoria should be repre sented in the San Francisco confer ence next month. A XEW ATLANTIC ROUTE. It is stated that a company of Bos ton, lass., capitalists have been quiet ly developing the foundations of a sca lort at the east end ot the straits of Canso, N. S., aud it expectations arc realized it will haveanimporlautbear inir upon future communication be tween Europe and America. The place, which is to be called Terminal City, is five miles east of Port Tulgrave, on the Intercolonial railway. and the gov ernment has consented to an extension of the railway to the place, and agreed to operate the extension as a part of the Intercolonial system. Terminal City is situated on one of the finest harbors on the Atlantic coast, having sufficient depth ot water for the larg est vessels xiiloat, being comparatively landlocked, absolutely free from ice, compartively fre from fog, and open to navigation at all times. A straight line on the map pf the world, from Chicago to Liverpool, passes through this point, and the distance between them is 400 miles shorter than by Port land, Boston or New York. It will take four days from Terminal City to Liverpool by the new steamers pro posed to be put on the route. When the railroad is completed and wharves are built, all passengers and mails from Europe will be delivered in New York or Montreal one day sooner than by any other route. It is the most easterly port open all the year round, and appears to be a natural shippiug port for the products of the Dominion to Europe. Tire experience of the Argentine Republic should Ikj a lesson to those who advocate the theory of gov ernment loans on farm mortgages through the medium of paper money issued on that basis of security. The Argentine Republic issued enormous sums of money as loans on tjic farms and produce of the country. These bonds or notes were called "cedulas,' and for a while they furnished a cir culating medium that was both con venient and plentiful, but when the merchants who had taken this paper money for their goods attempted to convert it into gold to pay their Euro lcan bills, their value went down with surprising celerity and the premium on gold jumped to 300 per cent aud over in a few weeks. Then the labor ers who had toiled and earned their "cedulas" by the sweat ot their brows found that their paper money was not worth half its face value to purchase food or clothing, joined in a revolt which certainly seemed justifiable, for the government which should have conducted financial operations safely and wisely had brought the whole peo ple to bankruptcy, want and ruin, the natural and sure result of delusive schemes to furnish plenty of cheap money. USEFUL HINTS. Use a warm knife in cutting warm bread and the like. Wash the mica of the stove doors with salt and vinegar. A woolen cloth is better than a brush to polish the kitchen stove. A coarse comb is good to smooth the fringe of towels, napkins, tidies, etc. One or two tablespoonfuls of am monia added to a pail of water will clean windows better than soap. As many as sixteen tons of sugar beets may be grown on an acre, and if they can not be converted into sugar they can be used as food for stock. "Washing the udder of -the cow be fore milking is a very important mat ter in summer. A small amount of filth in the milk will induce fermen tation. There is no breed of fowls Tinder the sun, the chickens of which, if well fed all their lives, will not be lender, juicy and toothsome if killed before they arc too old. And there is no breed that will le plump, tender and lit lor the table unless fed thus. Hind, we do not say that there is .no difference at all in breeds, but we say, that of thetwo things the breed and feeding, the latter is most im portant A Novel Mode of Destruction. A reward was offered some timo ago by the government of Kcw South Wales, for a method for the destruc tion of rabbits, Up to the end of last year about 1,500 methods had been proposed and examined, but none an swered the requirements. No less than 115 were for the destruction by disease. One curious scheme consist ed in killing the females and allowing "males to escape. TJiis, it is claimed, will bring about a preponderance of the males, who will worry the females to death with their attentions. This plan is actually under trial now. ISut it seems like cruelty to animals. " Tfce "Widest Hank on Earth'" Tbe Humboldt, GaL, Standard says tbere is a plank on exhibition in the railroad depot in that city, which is atxteea Icet in width. It was cut at tie Elk Hiver mill, to be placed aKg the exhibits at the world's fair at Chicago. as Laid out by h. THE "SICK MAN" AT HOME. How the Snltaii or Turkey Manages Ills Immense Household. It is estimated that over 0,000 per sons are fed daily at his Dolma Baglche palace when the sultan is there. One who claims to be well in formed gives a graphic picture of the sultan's housekeeping in the Leisure Hour. He admits that it is clear that j there is good executive ability in the ! management ot this enormous house j hold, for there is scarcely ever a jar or I hitch, even under the impulse of the most untimely demands. Every dif ferent department is under the control I of a person who is directly responsible I for that, and he has a corps of serv ' ants and slaves under his orders, who j obey him only, and he is subject to the ' treasurer of the household. Women I have no voice whatever in the manage j ment of anything in any department Their sole occupation is to wait upon j their respective mistresses, or to serve the sultan in some specified capacity, j and the labor about the palace is so i subdivided that no one works very hard except the lord high chamber I lain and treasurer of the household. , The treasurer of the household has the burden of the housekeeping on his I burly shoulders, and has an organized force of buyers who are each charged with the purchase of certain supplies for their individual departments, each j paying his helpers, servants and slaves, i One man is charged with the duty of I supplying all the fish, and, as to fur- nish fish for at least 6,000 persons is no ' light undertaking in a place whore there are no great markets such as there are in other largo cities, ho has to have about twenty men to scour the various small markets and buy of the fishermen, and each of these men has two others to carry the fish they buy. About ten tons of fish a week are required. There are nearly 18,000 pounds of bread eaten daily, for the Turks arc large bread eaters and this is all baked in the enormous ovens situated at some distance from the palace. The food for the sultan is cooked by one man and his aids, and no others touch it It is cooked in silver vessels, and when done each kettle is sealed by a slip of paper and a stamp, and this is broken in the presence of the sultan by the high chamberlain, who takes one spoonful of each separate kettle before the sultan tastes it. This is to guard against poison. The food is almost always served up to the sultan in the same vessels in which it is cooked, and these are often of gold, but when of baser met.nl the kettle is set into a rich golden bell-shaped holder, the handle of which is held by a slave while the sultan eats. The sultan never uses a plate, lie lakes all his food direct from the kettle, and never uses a table, and rarely a knife or fork a spoon, his bread, a pancake, or fingers arc found far h.uidier. Warm weather olten causes extreme tired feeling ami d billity, and in the weakcni'd condition of the system, dis eases arising from impure blood are li able to appear To gain strength, to overcome disease, ana to purify, vitalizc and enrich the blood, take Hood's barsa, paiilln.
