"By the vay it was iirst called to my notice wLile west, by a stnely of the latitudes and longitudes on the coast, that the snu never sets on tho United States. That has been called the glory ot Great Britain, and was im mortalized in ono of the speeches of Daniel Webster. Nov it is the glory of our own country, too. Since the purchase of Bussian America the farthest Aleutian island, stretching out toward Japan is as far west of San Francisco as Eastport, Maine, is eat of San Francisco. If you will look at tho map you will see that our republic extends through 19G degrees of longi tude, or more than half way aro md the world. When the sun sets on the Aleutian island, is an hour high on the eastern coast of Maine, and both the setting and rising sun shining on American citizens of tlie republic . ! was the .Republican part in it thoughtful regard of the country aim its destiny that thus placed San Frrn cisco in the center of the republic caat and west, instead of being on ihe ex treme verge of the western border. The jiossibilities of Alaska are wonder ful. Already it has repaid to us morcihanit cost, and thousands of millions more l:o in its mineral wealth and fisheries." Clarkson. HiHiaarck at Seventy-fivp. The prince is of giant stature and his proud and aristocratic bearing in creases his height. Although seventy five years old, the "Man of Iron" car ries himself as straight as the centen arian birch trees of his forests, and his corpulence is in exact proportion with his stature. His forehead is frowning and wrinkled, his nose well formed with large nostrils, and bends slightly lo the right. What struck me the most in his imposing physiogno my were his deep eyes jof mountain like blue, and sheltered by a forest of boldly erect hair. The lower part of his face harmonizes with the upper. His. mouth has a smile which is at once ironical and kind. It opens wide enough to let pass a hollow voice, slow and interrupted. One would think it to be the echo of a sol emn and distant oracle. Prince Bis marck speaks French as easily as German, but his words manifest care ful thought. Chicwjo Tribuiu. John G.
