The venomous attacks and lying personalities of the tilings who should be resiwnsible for the alleged "news" that appears in the Columbian from tlay to day, have for some time ceased to be a matter of concern to the pro prietors of The Astobiax, when di rected to them personally. But when these reckless villains attempt to smirch the character and impeach the integrity of other men who are above reproach both in private and public life, and friends of every law-abiding citizen in the state, iudignation con quers silence, and The Astoriax will devote a little space to showing up their reckless falsehoods. In yesterday morning's Columbian these unprincipled whelps editorially charge District Attorney McBride with neglect of his duty in the prose cution of the Fredrickson murder case on trial at Oysterville, state of "Wash ington. They charge Mr. McBride with the responsibility should the guilty iu that case not bo brought to justice, and insinuate that he is act ing in collusion with murderers and criminals of the deepest th-e. District Attorney McBride as a pri vate citizen, and as an official, com mands the respect of good men re gardless of party lines, and it has re mained for these reptiles to be the first to publish vile charges against him. But as for news: It will be news to people of the fifth judicial district of this state to hear, as the Columbian states, that Mr. arc Bride's duties require him to prose cute a murder case in the state of Washington. As usual, the Colum b ian goes out of its way with a total disregard of facta to injure the best men and best interests in the community. "Whether the Columbian's asser tions are made through criminal ig norance or with vile iutent, they in either case do n gross injustice to a respected citizen and official. District Attorney McBride has noth ing to do with the court at Oysterville which is trying the Fredrickson mur der case, and no one but the cham pion idiot of the northwest would think of charging him -with any re sponsibility in the case. 11 the thing that assumes to edit the Columbian has a shadow of shame left, it will retire from a position which should be conducted by a being pos sessing some intelligence at least The reptiles who fill the Columbian with their spewings and try to palm it off on an intelligent public for reliable news and intelligent editorial com ment, had best retire to dark and si lent holes, for it seems that they, like other "snakes, go blind in August" The English syndicate which has got hold of the Chicago breweries has already attempted to carry things with so high a hand that it is likelvto over reach itself. It has not only doubled the prise of beer, but proposes to com pel customers to continue their cus tom. In several cases the English syndicates have found that in buying plants they did not succeed in buying business. President Habrisox has spoken in "Bo uncertain tones in regard to the terrible lottery evil, which is absorb ing the hard earnings of many an in dustrious man and woman throughout the country. His special message to congress, which is given in full on the first page, has no equivocal tone, but k direct to the point It is especially commended for Sunday reading. There are over 1,900 canning con cerns in operation' in the country. Maryland leads the list with 59S. Maine next with 152, Virginia next with 120, New York 9S, New Jersey G8, with Ohio, Pennsylvania, Deleware and Illinois next in order, employing in various capacities over 1,000,000 people, and using the product ot over 1,000,000 acres of land. Fifteen mil lion cases in round numbers is the estimated output of these canneries in 1SS9, which, figured at the minimum of current cost, amounts to $25,000,000. Of this vast sum $15,000,000, at least, were paid to the farmer for his pro ducts. The packers paid $3,000,000 in duties last year, and charged tfie same against the cost of the goods. As the purchasing of canned products is gauged not hy the needs, but by the purchasing ability of consumers, any addition to the present cost will cur tail consumption in direct proportion. The proposed increase will add $3,G00,O00 more to the cost of our pro pucts. The increase will add at least an average of 10 per cont to cost which means curtailing enormously consumption and the consequent over throw of 50 per cent of the packers. The- canning industry is the most popular enterprise in the list of American manufactures. Consider ing its age and future possibilities it is the most promising. Less than twenty years ago canned products were a novelty, which the crude and costly art of preserving and the ex cessive cost of cans placed beyond the reach ot popular consumption.
