TUESDAY.
JULY 29. 1890
Astoria's population lias increased
723 per cent, since the last federal
census.
As Laid out by h. f. l. Logan The Coining Seaside Besort of Oregon.
As Laid Out by H, F. L. LOGAN
It is -worth $125 net profit to an
eastern Oregon federal official to bring
an Indian charged -with selling liquor
to Portland to have Judge Deady fine
the Indian $10 and tell him not to do
so any more. Rightly worked, it is a
great scheme.
"Wagon Road From Terminus of Astoria and South Coast Railroad to the Resort, Affording a Lovely Drive.
The inhabitants of the state of
"Washington are beginning to assert
with justifiable positiveness that there
is hardly a surveyed section in the
stele that's square. Cheap work is
the cause of it There is a little in
accuracy in some Oregon surveys,
too.
"Was Oregon included in the Louis
iana purchasef is the question argued
in some of the eastern papers. Well,
judging from the amount of money
sent to the Louisiana lottery, it looks
as though if it was Oregon is paying
back its quota of the former purchase
money to the latest one.
Messrs. Dow and McMillan are col
lecting "road tax.' It takes a good
long while, and they just about make
day wages. It is a crude system, and
the most of the money collected gees
to the collectors. The fault is not
with the collectors, but in the law that
makes such foolishness possible.
The San Francisco Examiner
closed down rather adruptly on its
series of articles relating to the un
crowned kings of the commonwealth,
published by tljp Historical company,
young Hearst having struck a snag in
finding a biography and picture of the
old man, senator Hearst, illuminating
its pages.
Charles Iioimrxs drew a revolver
and shot dead a parrot that called
after him, "Is this hot enough for
you?' as ho was walking the streets
of St Louis during one of the fervid
days of last week. By this act of
bravery this obscure citizen becomes
known to the country at large. What
does he want?
Aii the papers in the state assert
that Oregon's census has been poorly
taken. It is thought that there are
50,000 more people in the state, actual
residents, than are shown on the census
returns. It would bo a grim joke if
that would make us lose an extra con
gressman for the next ten years, but it
certainly looks that way.
Spokane has a rod and gun club,
the members of which got tired of
seeing a big sawmill company dump
ing sawdust into the clear and flash
ing waters of the Spokane river con
trary to law. So they had the law en
forced. Then the sawmill closed
down. Four hundred men were
thrown out of employment.
The Pioneer Press of St Paul,
Itinn., no longer carries the head
lag of the St Paul and Minneapo
lis Pioneer Press. Minneapolis is
dropped out and the Pioneer Press
proposes henceforth to be a St Paul
paper. The census fight, now being
investigated by a United States com
missioner on a charge of fraud in the
Minnneapolis census, did it
Lightkeeper Elliott, of Gasparilla,
FhL, found a 100-pound bombshell on
the island the other day, and pro
ceeded to open it with a chisel. When
he succeeded and saw that it was
filled with perfectly good powder his
hair stood on end. One spark of fire
from the chisel as he chipped the
shell would have necessitated the ap
pointment of a new lighthouse keeper.
Sometime ago the Southern Oregon
newspapers had awell-written account
of a newly discovered cave which ri
valled the Mammoth cave of Ken
tucky in wonders. It was a hoax, but
took well. Now they announce
a big hole in the coast range "where
last year stood a noble mountain."
They'll make further discoveries be
fore long.
A swindler with a new idea, and
geserally a successful one, is going
about the country. He has packages
of stationery which he sells for various
amounts, according to the circum
stances of the particular case, and de
ckles that each package contains a
aaoney order which will be cashed by
as agent who will call later. 1 u this
way he gets from 3 to So for a pack
age worth about 50 cents.
Portland will spend $2,000 cnler
teining the Oregon editors. They
are coming to Astoria, and should
saeet a hearty reception here. It will
cost something to rightly receive
tfeetn, and it is none too soon to
begin raising the money. These are
Oregon newspaper men who are coni
ig, awidewake crowd (there isn't a
"journalist" in the lot) and their im
prtaekms of Astoria will be read for
tke ext year by a million people.

How She Swore Back at Hhu.
Mrs. Binks is a pleasant, mild-mannered
little woman, says the Washing
ton Post, who is almost heart-broken
oyer the fact that herjhusband is ad
dicted to the use o profanity.
"Why don't you swear back at him V
said her sister one day.
"I couldn't do any thing like that,"
said Mrs. 13inks. lint her sister is a
woman with much force of character,
and sneceeded in exacting a promise
that this rigorous method would be
tried.
Mr. Binks came home rather tired
and not in a very amiable mood.
"Well," he said, as he glanced over
the table disgustedly, "if this ain't
the slimmest meal I ever saw Til bo
d ."
"So so will I, John," rejoiued Mrs.
Binks, meekly.
Boils and Pimples and other affections
arising from impure blood may appear
at this season when the blood is heated.
Hood's Sarsaparil la removes the cause
of these troubles by purifying, vitaliz
ing and enriching the blood, and at the
same time it gives strength to the whole
system.
