Tlie Waters of Snake Iliver to be Diverted for the Benefit of the Great Salt Lake Basin. Certain Salt Lake parties, says the Boise Statesman, Have been trying to workup a scliemo for diverting the waters of Snake river into irrigating-" canals for tho benefit of the Great Salt Lake basin. The scheme has no na tional foundation and cannot have the slightest hope of ever materializing; but the discussion that has grown out of the matter has furnished tho "Wood River j77neswithatextuFonwhi2hto construct the following neat bit of a sermen: The Snake river valley anil tributary region will, ere another cen tury elapses, contain a population of 40,000,00010 50,000,000 souls. Surely such a population can only he main tained by the use of the waters of the Snake for irrigating or manufacturing. I The Snake will not half suffice for this, even though even drop of water . ilowing into or m it, from its source to its mouth, shall be availed of. Even now, the navigation of the Columbia j is greatly impeded because of the low stage of water at all seasons, but es pecially in the summer and fall; and the national government is spending sums of money aggregating millions of dollars to improve its navigation. j Were Idahoaus to be stupid enough to permit the Snake river to bo di verted to the Great Salt Lake, or to ! be put to any use except that mani-1 festly intended by nature, they would j be fit candidates for a lunatic asylum. But Idaho is not the only state in terested in maintaining undisturbed the flow of the Snake river to the sea. When the question shall be up for public discussion, or for legislative inquiry, the states of "Washington and Oregon, both of which are almost as largely interested as we ourselves are in that truly magnificent river, may be depended on to raise as great, as insurmountable objections to the diver sion of any part of it as we of Idaho will. Mr. Trimmer s scheme, we repeat, is impracticable, and he may as well make up his mind to this, and apply his energies in more promising direc tions. Tho Snake is indispensable to Idaho, Washington and Oregon, and it shall not, cannot, be taken from us. C;ieltlciis Ar-ncn &nlic.
