vrw - -BM5-C I1) ASTORIA. OEEGON: WEDNESDAY. ..JULY 23, 1S30 These are now forty-four states, if Louisiana is counted as one. For the first limo in fifteen years no ship has loaded at Astoria this year "with salmon for England. There isn't half as much swearing over the census results in some of the Oregon cities as was expected. They haven't got the people to do it. Owrs-Q to the fact that the lands of the west are being rapidly taken up, a Denver paper predicts the abdication of the cattle king and the extinction of the cowboy. Experiments have found that the Atlantic breakers have a force of three tons to the square foot Thus a sur face of only two square yards sustains a blow from a heavy Atlantic breaker equal to 51 tons. Fbancis IMubphy during five mouths work hi Iowa has secured 27,000 signatures to the pledge, and this is not taking into accoont the pledge he obtained from a charming widow to become his wife. A practical exposition of Mr. Bel lamy's ideas in "Looking Backward'' is started in Loudon. The members of the society pay Cd. a month and "labor, working for each other, paying each other in labor instead of mouev." Coxgbess will probably adjourn without repealing the act of June 3, 1878, which permits one to take 1G0 acres of timber land by paying S2.50 an acre for it. It was thought that the law would be repealed at the pres ent session of congress. It is wise to leave the law as it is, for however much it has been abused it is the only way that one can acquire title to any of Uncle Sam's domain without tedious aud ofttinies interminable delay. A shami boy in Indiana hadlhe most glorious "Fourth" yet recorded. lie sot off $2,000 worth of fireworks, and it didn't cost him a single penny either. A sun glass directed upon a bunch of firecrackers in a dealer's window created the entire disturbance. Of course both store and stock were ruined, but the small boy didn't care for that He en joyed his pyrotechnic display while it lasted and then quietly withdrew into the crowd. He has not yet reappeared on the scene of his labors. PeopIiE who complain that railroad work hereabouts is "slow," should note the fact that all railroad work in the state is at present a little slow. It is "slow" regarding the three railroads to be built out of Portland this sum mer; it is "slow" on the Oregon Pacific extension, and in southern Oregon. Ours is not an isolated case by any means, and in tliis regard we of As toria do not suffer by comparison. It takes a good while to get things go ing, and when they do start the thoroughness and apprent "slowness" of preliminary work is amply made up by the celerity and satisfactory pro gress onco the work of construction is well in hand. If the American flag be restored to the seas, says the Tribune, let it be over American-built ships and let it represent the American principle of economic independence. Trade will follow that flag. It follows the flag that tells no lies, that does not palm off a foreign-built and foreign-maimed ship as an American ship, but honestly embodies the genuine spirit of Ameri can enterprise and commercial inde pendence, instead of the Free Trader s servile dependence upon the industries of foreign countries. An American merchant fleet worthy of the traditions of the conntry is a high object of national) aspiration. It can be re stored Dy the passage of the pending shipping measures. There are real estate men who would feel hurt if dishonesty were de clared outright, yet they will not scruple to put on the market and sell outside and "confidence" properties they positively know to be the veriest swindles. There are now over one hundred "wild cat" cities on Puget sound, says the Ileal Estate Review, and from evidences in hand it would seem the firms holding them are doing unfortunately well, as the sale of a few of these lots in these "cities" is quite sufficient to pay for the whole town site. The firms who handle these new towns, in nine cases out of ten, never see what they are selling, yet by adver tising in places remote from their place of operation and by an ingenious, and sometimes not so ingenious fabri cation of facts, they manage to draw thousands of dollars investment money into their hands, and there a good ninety-nine per cent of it remains while the investor's title is placed in "loss.1' Investors cannot be too caro fml in obtaining evidences of what they are baying. Is Consumption Incurable? Read the follewing: Mr. C. II. ATorris, Newark, Ark says: "Was down with Abscess of Lungs, and friends and pliy s'tci&ns pronounced me an Incurable Consumptive. Began taking Dr. King's Xew Discovery for Consumption, am nowonmy third bottle, and able to oversee the work on my farm. It is the finest medicine ever made." Jesse Middlewart, Decatur, Ohio, says: "Had it not been for Dr. King's New Discoverv for Consumptien I would have died of Lung Troubles. Was given Mp by doctors. Am now in best of health." Trescott who has had a force of from eight to a dozen men fishing for sturgeon near the lower Cascades since the middle of April, and who has bought all the sturgeon caught by the wheels at the Cascades during the season, and has had the whole, comprising many tons, stowed away in the cold storage ware house and frozen, yesterday shipped the first carload for this season east. The New York market has been sup plied so far this season from the Dela ware, aud the season is now about over there, and as owing to the mild winter there was but little ice put tip and it is very dear. None of this Delaware fish has been frozen and now the Columbia fish is wanted in that market Mr. Trescott has had some boats built and will put a lot of men at work fishing at Astoria, and will also buy the sturgeon caught by outside fishermen. If his shipments reaches New York all right, of which he has no doubt, he will have men at work .ill winter, as this is the only place iu the country where fishing can bo carried on successfully twelve months in the year. The roe of the sturgeon is cased and barreled for shipment to Europe, from where some ot it will doubtless hnu its way back to this country iu tins with unread able labels, to furnish the delight ful romnatic sandwiches so prized by beer drinkers. Orcgonian, 21. A $1,000 BET. The memorandum of an agree ment made in Astoria, Oregon, this IStli day of July, 1890, by and between Herman Wise and J. Ash, witnesscth: that each of the parties hereto have deposited with Mr. C. J- Trenchard of said city, the sum of $500, and that it is niutualty agreed between the par ties hereto, that if the sales of said Herman Wise, at his clothing es tablishment at 4G9 and 471 Second street, in said city, shall exceed the full sum of 1 5,000 within the next sixty days from the date hereof, all of the total sum of $1,000, deposited as aforesaid, shall be paid to said Herman Wise, on his affording said C. J. Trenchard satisfactory evidence that his sales have in said period exceeded said amount and that if said sales do not in said period exceed said amount, said total sum of $1,000 is to be paid said J. Ash. Witness our hands a:d seals the day and year first above written. Iikkmax Wise. J. Ash. Signed in presence i.f C. J. Cujrris, Notary Public for Oregon. seal Herman Wise is not a betting man, but Mr. Ash was bragging so much about the amount of bus iness done by certain houses on the Sound, that Mr. Wise offered to bet 500 that he can sell just as much clothing as any retail clothing house on Puget Sound. This is a matter of home pride, and as Herman Wise offers his entire stock at cost, rather than lose the bet. it is safe to say that Astorians generally will help themselves and their town, bj' helping Mr. Wise to win this $1,000".
