'i r W v ' BRIGHTON BEACH! ASTORIA. OREGON: IIIKIHIIIItBUHXIEEHMHHXH ai2iiiHiiiiaaiiiiiii SATURDAY.. JULY 12. 1800 ""gJK3-. OF PRESENT IMPORTANCE. Tke Astosias -would direct As toria's attention to the present condi tion ol the city's Bteamer traffic. Onr steamers have, many o them, been sold that used to ply to adfacent points, and are now running in other -raters; they are gone, and their places are not filled. Shoalwater bay and Grey's harbor, are growing fast Astoria should have and hold that trade. It naturally and geographically belongs here. But it will not gravitate this way. It mast be brought Our business men will readily see that this is a matter of vital Importance to them. It is not business to sell our coast boats and cease ownership. Astoria has not so many sources of wealth that she can ignore or annihilate any of them. To-day we own few boats. Trade is growing at our gates, but it is carried by in boats owned elsewhere. Here is a chance for the profitable investment of capital in a legitimate business enterprise that would aid the town. It may not be as radiantly dazzling as some more airy projects advanced by rainbow chasers, but it is strictly business and will commend itself to the common sense of the people. Teult says the Spokane Falls Re ticic; "Those Pacific coast million aires who have an idea that they can pay from SLXX) to $10,000 and buy their way iuto history greatly mistake the temper of the world. True, they can hire a shrewd publisher to place their portrait and several pages of fulsome praise in an elegant and im posing publication, but that is not history, no more than gold-washed jewelry is solid gold. "When the true and undying history of the west is written not one sentence will be dic tated by wealth. The men whose in fluence upon the west has been for all time, who have left their stamp upon its civilization and its laws, will be come the objects of the historian's pen, and whether they wore wealthy or poor wul cut no figure at nil. Wealth has never swayed the histor ian's pen in the past, nor will it in the future. True, many wealthy men have taken a place in the history of this country. But, without exception, they were men whose influence was felt aside from their wealth, men who founded cities and states, whose enter prise and daring led to the construc tion of transportation links or whose wealth was employed in the founding of institutions of learning and charity. The men who grew rich simply by acquiring real estate, or conducting banks aro not going into any history that the world will care to read."" Aliax Weik, the former editor of the Port Townscnd Argus, is a sort of Pooh Bah in the new state of "Wash ington. He is secretary of state in surance commissioner, member 'of the state land commission, member of the commission to select indemnity school lauds, member of the state library commission, member of the commission to Belect a site for a nor mal school, sealer of weights and measures, member of the state board of equalization of taxes and of the state board of equalization in the value of tide lands, has to audit the state printing bill, has supervision over the capitol building and grounds and is required to furnish supplies to the state officers and library. He comes pretty near having a contract to run the interior department of the state and doesn't leave much for the rest of them to fill. But after running a daily newspaper, it's a sort of a rost to him to fill a dozen state offices. Titk admission of six new states cuts down the list of territories. Utah onght to feel ashamed to bo kept in the list of territories by the curso of 3Iormonism, when her wealth and population justify her admission to the Union. But while tainted with Iformonism she can never come into the American union of sovergeiu states. ICew Mexico has enough pop ulation, but they are not American in instinct, and are better out of the Union than in it Arizona will some day be a state, as will Alaska, but their day is distant The Indian ter ritory will be absorbed in the course of years, but appearances indicate that 44 will be the number of states in the Jnion for several years to come. As Laid Out by H. F. L. Logan The Coming Seaside Resort of Oregon. As Laid Qui by H. F. L. LOGAN Wagon Road From Terminus of Astoria an.d South Coast Railroad to the Resort, Affording a Lovely Drive. ROBB & FAHHER, General Agents, - - - JkVFQEfeX.Jk, OBEOll A new Atlantic seaport to be estab lished by Boston capitalists at the east end of the Straits of Canso, Nova Scotia, to be called Terminal City. It is said that steamers' time between it and Liverpool will be four days. Emerson's thought is worth remem bering this census year: ''The true test of civilization is not the census, nor the size of the cities, nor the crops, but the kind of men the country turns out." Epoch. The transition from Ions, and painful sickness to robust health marks an epoch in the life of the indi vidual. Such a remarkable event is treasured in the memory and the agency whereby the good health has been at tained is gratefully blessed. Hence it is that so much is heard in praise of Elec tric Bitters. So many feel they owe their restoration to health to the use of the Great Alterative and Tonic if you arc troubled with any disease of the Kidneys, Liver or Stomach, of long or slioit standing j ou will surely find re lief by use of Electric liitters. TxsNeK York Tribune, -which has been conspicuous for many years in securing jastice for veterans of the army, calls for n halt in the matter of pensions. It says: The measure of proper expenditures for pensions has been, reached, if, indeed, it has not been passed already. There is no ac tive demand on the part of the vet erase of the Union for sums exceeding those already appropriated, and those vetera&s are sensible enough to know that appropriations exceeding half ike satire revenue of the government to benefit a small fraction of the peo ple aught quickly cause the collapse of the whole system for lack of popu lar approval of support Tsx old-time comic almanac used to twwrnin, among other directions for the farater, the words "Now is the tMM to plant catfish seed!"
