The one that Cleve land vetoed appropriated $22,000,000. Eight btrect grades are advertised this morning. It will be a relief and a. valuable piece of news to property owners if these grades now advertised are definite and permanent and not subject to change for the next few years. i Attention is directed to the figures of our shipping and commerce, pub lished olsewhore. They are official and correct. There is much that is not enrolled or taken cognizance of, which if counted, would swell the tonnage figures to nearly double the amount. The San Francisco Call of the 7th has an interview with "a high official of the Southern Pacific liailroad com pany," who says: "Itfr. Huntington has ortcn expressed himself as opposed to accepting subsidies. That is not railroading, aud is sure to entangle the company receiving the subsidy in endless controversy and difficulty. If the people contribute one dollar to ward the construction of a road they think they own it, and are always interfering in its operation.'' On the 21st iust., the annual meet ing will be held in school district No. 1. Among other things, the project of cstablisliing a liigh school will be discussed. There should be a full attendance to talk over this import ant matter. There is considerable stroug opinion on both sides of the question. The Astoriax has enunci ated its views on this subject moie than once. It tenders thence of its columns, and any one having an opinion on the matter either way is iimted to express it in The Astomax. It is only by discussing these things that affect the public welfare thai an intelligent conclusion can be readied. The transition from long, lingering and painful sickness to robust health marks an epoch in the life of the indi vidual. Such a reninikablc event is treasured in the memory and the agency whereby the good health has been at tained is gratefully blessed.
