W., rlio come to sr seaside city to bold their annual session. They represent a great beneficial organization; a brotlierbood -rOic- bold that fraternity and charity and mutual assistance are not so much a silent precept as an active duty, and are flo ws a noble "work in providing practi cal help to the -widow and orphan over -whose stricken forms they throw the mantle of instant relief. An order that has in this country 240,000 mem bers; thatfspent for beneficiary pur poses $1200,093 last year, and that affords a sure fund in case of the death of the head or support of the family, deserves recognition and applause for the good accomplished and the magni tude of its results. The Astoriax vpdeomes the delegates, and hopes that their visit -will be a pleasant one, and the result of their deliberations con ducive to the lasting benefit of the great order they represent COZtMEKCEXEXT. Pekhats a hundred thousand boys and girls have graduated from school iaiho last month and put out upon the mercies of the cold world. They willrfl believe they are train" locon- qner the universe in some way. The pupils in. the lower classes of their schools will look up to them as to superior beings, and with the music, tin? bouquets, the sweet incense of ap plause and the new clothes the grad uates themselves cannot be blamed for thinking they are something un common. They will learn better fast enough when they come to rub against the world. They will learn that nobody is anybody very much, and that the world valnes people only in propor tion as they can help it in some way. irost or these young people, if they are of the right sort, trust mankind. They believe there is such a thing as disinterested friendship, as true love and tho realisation of high and gen erous hopes. And so there is. Onlv they will be told first thing on their entrance in the world that there are none of these things; that human life is nothing but a selfish, savage scram ble, every man for himself and the devil for them all Boys and girls, don't believe it Keep your own hearts always warm, penerous and true. See to that and yoawill be sure to meet others like you. It i3 the natural law of at traction. Then again, do not give up your lofty dreams, You can achieve them, tliongh it is infinitely harder than you now think. You must knock long and desperately at the doors till yon are almost exhausted, but they will open to you. Know that for certain. Suc cess is dead sure to come to the one rho works hard enough and waits long enough. It generally does not ccmo in tho way he expects, hardly ever, in fact, but that only proves that his way was the wrong way. For this reason it is not well to be too set on your own particular road up the hill. Keep your minds always open or re ceptive, so as to recognize the liest when it does come. Soshall von keen your lives high and pure, so shall yon not crystalize into hard, mean, stingy mortals. JOY THAT KILLED. HxrLiss Bernard Heeny! Ho was an iron moldcr at Rockland, 111.; rough and boisterous when intoxi cated, but a good fellow withal. On his wedding day he was very merry. He and some friends celebrated the rvent noisily. A policeman interfered to stop them. A fight followed and the officer was lolled. They were ar rested, and Bernard was sontenced to imprisonment for life in the Joliet penitentiary. It was a doleful ending of his wedding day. He served out lart of the sentence and behaved well so well that his sentence was shortened. Tho good tidings were brought to him that he would be free in October. Heeny was overjoyed. After all the nightmare dream of the murder, the dreary days that followed in the state's prison, he was to step forth once more into the world a free man among men. He had picked up acquaintance with Ncebe, the anarch ist, and on getting the good news hastened to tell him of it Neebe listened and Heeny talked. But sud denly, in the midst of the storjr, the speaker threw up his hands and dropped to the ground. "When they raised him he was dead. A sudden heart attack, brought on by his excite ment, was the cause. - - There is something imposing in tho fact that New York will enter the closing decade of the nineteenth cen tury as the second city in the world. The census estimates say 1,700,000, may be less than Paris, but this is an inadequate expression of what New York really is. Brooklyn, Staten Island, Newark, Jersey City, tho in habited places that compose New York, depend upon it, build it up, added io the accepted figures of the cky, alose easily give the metropolis 3)80,000. London surpasses this, but curly is tho twentieth century New Yotkwillbe trying conclusions with liOttdoB. It is remarked as a curious fact that a eeriaSoftte representing one of our ahwc dollars, it carried into Mexico, eaa Ve sold at a premium of more than 98r et over tho Mexican silver r, wkioh cos tains more silver than M Mm Gold is the talisman that opens al most every avenue to success, and it is for gold that all mankind are strug gling. Over the wires there flashed last night the startling intelligence pt the discovery in Colorado of the rich est gold mine ever knoTvn, rivaling even the richest strikes of California in the days of '49. Thousands of men .will flock to Tincup, and if the vein holds out, the stirring scenes of a gold camp will be enacted. "Vividly it will bring to the mind of old residents on this coast recollections of similar events in -which they -were active par ticipants. The confirmation of the telegraphic reports -will be -watched with eager interest all over the coun try. Meanwhile investments in As toria real estate are sure to bring gold to the fortunate investors. There is no chance of loss. Two recent utterances on tho status of the negro in the Christian church are in marked contrast One was by Archbishop Ireland, Roman Catholic, who has declared that no church is a fit temple of God where a man, be cause of his color, is excluded or made to occupy a corner. The other was by Bishop Keener of the Methodist Episcopal church south, who thanked God that the Methodist Episcopal church south i3 "solidly white." Northern Methodist journals do not hesitate to say that the Roman Catho lic prelate's view is more in accor dance with tho spirit of Christianity. Postmaster-General Clabkson says the postal service expenses last year were $72,000,000 and tho earn ings S6S,000,000, which leaves a bal ance of only $4,000,000 to be pro vided for. He thinks that tho railway postal clerks are very poorly paid, considering their dangerous work. There were eleven clerks killed and eighty-five disabled in tho railway ser vice last year more than in the army. A LETTER FROM TORTLAND. Portland, July 5, 1890. Editor Asteriax: The business men of Portland had determined to have a grand celebra tion on the Fourth of July, and had raised a nice sum of money to bo ex pended for the entertainment of tho good people who might chance to come from the cow counties, and the nearer villages of Salem and Van couver, to see the greatness of Port laud and learn how every farmer, every mechanic and merchant patron has contributed toward the erection of palatial hotels, banks and stores in this wealthiest of Pacific-coast cities. Yes, everybody could come for half fare, but it would be an act of base ingratitude to a hospitable entertainer to carry away either gold, silver or paper money, when the visitor is kindly offered so many opportunities to invest or deposit tho few remaining paltry dollars he will not need when he reaches homo again. Everybody comes to Portland to see old acquain tances of years gone by. All kinds of church and other associations too meet here; grand lodges of every known order, corporations and con tractors. In fact no matter where they live, or what great scheme they have in view they all seemed to have their eye on Portland, even the fish commissioners maintain a friendly ac quaintance with each other through their frequent visits to the metropolis. But now this great city is sorely troubled the tims allotted by governmant for the enumeration of tho people had exphod and yet it is said, several thousands have not been counted, this is however a tender sub ject, both to the city and tho enumera tors. Steamboat inspection seems to bo attracting the attention of tho public at this time, and Astorians with their shoalwater bay companeros aro tho sufferers now. The wise captain in spector of hulls has ordered the Clara Parker to tie up at her own dock and report to the custom house. She was built about ten years ago, but her days of usefulness are sud denly cut short There are a number of boats now in daily service that an tedate her construction by several years, aro they not too old, and too rot ten to bear a close inspection? Or is it necessary for largo corporations to have their lwats inspected, and comply with the United States steam boat law as individuals aro compelled to do? There is a class of men who when placed hi positions of trust or authority assume wonderful impor tance in their own estimation when dealing with individuals, but a big steamboat company can cliange a. man's estimation of himself and his duty very quickly sometimes if they want to and they frequently' want to. But our officers will doubtless how to the line and be just to rich corpora lion or poor individual, without prej udice or partiality. The placing of the A. & S. C. bonds is hailed by every Astorian as a stroke of good fortune, and now what can further hinder the work from action and substantial progress. M. MARINE NEWS AND NOTES. The steamer Dolphin arrived from Shoalwater bay last evening. The steamer Cosmopolis, Capt Geo. Dittmers, had a large cargo of freight for various ports on Pugot sound, in cluding 500 sheep and four cars of steel rails. The steamship City ofTopeka, Capt David Wallace, which sailed for Alaska, took from hero 31 packages of grocer ies and 511 bundles of shooks, and had over 700 tons of frieght The steamers Printer and Typlioon, which left here early yesterday morn ing for Gray's harbor, were met at 9 o'clock yesterday morning, opposite Shoalwater bay by the steamer Alli ance on her way down the coast They were going up all right The steamer Alliance, Capt Peter son, arrived from Gray's harbor yes terday afternoon, and left soon after for Portland. "When at Hoquiama, last Thursday evening, her propellor came'off, but fortunately was caught in the iron shoe, and the vessel was towed to the beach, where the pro pellor was again put in place. . . Sucli a remarkable event Is treasured fn the. memory and the agency whereby the good health has been at tained is gratefully blessed. Hence it Is that so much is heard in praise of Elec tric Bitters. So many feel they owe their restoration to health to the use of the Great Alterative and Tonic If you are troubled with any disease of the Kidneys, Liver or Stomach, of long or short standingyou will surely find re lief by use of Electric Bitters.
