The Suxday Welcome, of Portland, is a paper that devotes considerable space to theatrical matters. The Evening Telegram does, too, but not so much as the Welcome. The latter, in a critique on theatrical critics, criti cizes the theatrical criticisms of the Oregonian, -which -are -written by Mr. Bangs, and does it in a way that is not -wholly complimentary to the theatrical critic of that journal. Some of its strictures are deserved, but Mr. Bangs should not bo blamed for the policy of the paper, and it is but justice to say that his theatrical criti cisms are always tempered with a gentleness and mercy that betotens a more than ordinary amount of news paper charity. Between the public and the actors and managers, truthful theatrical critics have a hard time. It needs a great deal of courage to write an opinion that may result in serious monetary loss to the theater, and in Uict a severe wound on a sensitive manor woman. If one oDly writes praise the public simply impute to him all sorts of motives or rewards. The hardest thing in the world is to get credit tor any honesty, more especially in this business. Managers hate critics, and yet if the vote were taken all over America the immense majority would be in favor of retain ing them. Managers only care for space. They will bear a column of abuse, and bo perfectly happy over twenty lines of praise. But five lines will make them mad, and to leave them out altogether will drive them crazy. Every mention, especially of any length, is an adver tisement, and most managers are rather pleased when a critic gets angry id gives them a noticeable amount of violent attack. Actors measure lines, too. Even praise will not satisfy them if one man gets two lines more than another. They will quarrel over an adjective, and gently hint that it would have been better if an adverb had been added. A certain editor once wrote a laudatory notice of a certain actor s performance. Ho sent back a note of thanks. He insisted upon the editor making an appoint ment with him, and when he got him all to himself, he bored Mm for two hours with an elaborated statement or how great an actor he was; gave Ids repertoire, his finest characters, and went through scenes to illustrate the superior brilliancy of his genius. The next day the editor had occasion to condemn something he did, and ho never spoke to that editor afterward except with an ill concealed ill wilL But the most trying of all that the theatrical critic has to deal with is the advance agent As a role, an advance agent is a man who knows nothing about his company except what ho reads in the managerial advertise "ments as they are published at so much or so little an inch each inser tion. Theatrically, he is born in the bill poster's establishment, cradled in a job printing office, and brought up on the favorable and extravagant ad jectives of the English language in flaming ink. His general theory is that the newspaper is printed to puff his show. He has a profound idea that nobody except the man who pays him Ins wages is so great a benefactor as he. He is ignorant of the existence of mind. To him there is nothing but matter. He is generally aggressive, always illiterate, and he looks upon the printed extract from the Anacortes Enterprise as of equal value with anything that the gifted "Winter over wrote for the New York Trib tine. He recognizes words, and these by their size. He does not know the English langnage, having for the most part spent his early life in hanging around the theaters or newspaper offices, car rying messages. He always wants to treat, and feels that a theatrical critic or an editor who will not accept his whisky is above his business. A pass to his show is more than remunera tion for the greatest service. He only knows, like a parrot, what he lias to tell, and always quotes the bill board. Ho has invariably a stock of stories of incidents that happened to his star or his show, to illustrate the high esteem in which he or it has been held else where. A critic's duty is to the public, and ho is as much bound to give the maaager and actor credit for good work, as to condem imposture and false pretense. To do this requires that he be a free lance, with no oblique vision in the direction of the business office, a state of affairs not yet wholly attained in Oregon journalism. Natube is the great restorer. "What ahe cannot renovate she beautifies in KMeway. "When the ruthless storm or tho vandal ax fells some magnifi oeat tree, we look with regret at the prostrate monarch and say: "Ah, this itlead unlovely monarch mars tho greea lnnony of the scene." Thus she passes her healing fingers over all the unsightly wounds and scars of tho physical world, from the storm torn limb of the tree to the glaring clay of tho new-made grave. She mellows and modifies all. Does she not even cover with tho mould of forgetfulness or tho moss of resignation tho wounds and scars of tho heart? Doe3 she not niako green with hope the graves in our hearts, whethor made by death or fato? The mortgage tax law is ono of the things that tho next state legislature should repeal. The law is not a vicious one, in theory; but it is a de structive ono in practice. It is tho practical working of tho law that makes The Astokian so earnestly favor its repeal. The rich can protect themselves. Let us Jiave some pro tection for the poor. It is not to tho interest of the poor man of this state; tho possible borrower, to have laws exist that make money dearer. That is what the mortgage law does. And every time a man wants to borrow 300, or 1,000, that law makes it cost him more than it would if the statute was not in existence. The great lack of tho Sound coun try is tho absence of any "back coun try," any tributary area. Seattle and Tacoma depend almost wholly on San Francisco steamers for a largo part of their food supplies. Astoria grows more independent in this regard every year, and as the country round about is settled up the extraordinar facilities it possesses for feeding and supplying a great city is becoming more and more manifest. Tho Sound has many good points for good cities, but tho possibilities in this regard hinder con centration at any one of them. Thebe is consiJerablo guess work and much blind investment in boom towns, and impossible "city" sitC3 on tho Sound. An investment in Astoria real estate is safe, permanent and sure. As soon as those on the inside with the railroad companies get through unloading wilderness property at alleged "terminal" points north of us, the true inwardness of the last two years will appear, much to the disgust of credulons investors in lots at $1,000 apiece that can then be rebought at 1,000 per quarter section. The peninsula that Astoria is built upon is oftimes likened to Now York. It has advantages of which Manhattan island is totally devoid. Its water front is superior in depth and better arranged; it lies better for the facil ities of commerce and the demands of shipping; vessels can enter and do part with less hindrance than at New York, and tho approaches to the city for railroads are of a less costly char acter than those of our great eastern prototype. The census will not disclose the fact, but twice as many young men and women between the ages of 18 and 28 are obliged to wear glasses as wore them ten years ago. The change in climate, it is said, chiefly accounts for the great increase. A. J. STEELE, President. L. O. CHENATJLT, Vice-President and Business Manager. J.F.BOUKN, Sec. J. II. JONES, Treasurer.
