now of Astoria, beat that record. In
1872 he caught and delivered to Robt

made by one person, in the time, with
a gill net.
Owing to the big run of fish at the
Cascades the canneries have reduced
the price of gill net fish to two cents
per pound. Almost all the fishermen
have quit.

Geo. Stephenson with two wheels at
the Cascades caught seven tons of fish
one day last week. All of the can-
nerics have been doing well. Some
of them have been putting up from
400 to 800 cases per clay, for the last
four weeks.
State fish commissioner Crawford
was informing us Saturday, that he
expects soon to go up on the head
waters of the Snake, Spokane and
Columbia rivers and select a location
for the proposed fish hatchery in
"Washington. lie estimates that the
crate a hatcher' that would turn out
four to five million young
fish each year. The mode of propa
gating the young salmon at a hatch
ery is very simple and successful, he
says. The fish are caught in seines
or gill nets and thc spawn extracted
from them. The male and female
spawn is then thoroughly mixed to
gether an!nafijied n Pans where
water is kept constantly running over
them. It generally takes from forty
to seventy days to hatch the eggs,
according to the degree of tempera
ture of the water at
the time. The hashing is done
generally from bptcmber to Feb-,
ruary. The young salmon are kept in
the nursery until thy attain a length
of about six inches. From carefnl
and accurate statistics it is found that
a greater per cent of the eggs are
hatched by the artificial process of
incubation than by the natural meth
od. One reason is the spawn is more
thoroughly mixed and another is the
spawning beds are undisturbed by
other species of fish that prey on the
eggs. Commissioner Crawford will
make his report to the legislation this
fall, recommending a location, that
will doubtless bo adopted.
