The mode of propa gating the young salmon at a hatch ery is very simple and successful, he says. The fish are caught in seines or gill nets and thc spawn extracted from them. The male and female spawn is then thoroughly mixed to gether an!nafijied n Pans where water is kept constantly running over them. It generally takes from forty to seventy days to hatch the eggs, according to the degree of tempera ture of the water at the time. The hashing is done generally from bptcmber to Feb-, ruary. The young salmon are kept in the nursery until thy attain a length of about six inches. From carefnl and accurate statistics it is found that a greater per cent of the eggs are hatched by the artificial process of incubation than by the natural meth od. One reason is the spawn is more thoroughly mixed and another is the spawning beds are undisturbed by other species of fish that prey on the eggs. Commissioner Crawford will make his report to the legislation this fall, recommending a location, that will doubtless bo adopted.
