Inasmuch as tho Western Union Telegraph company receives over $1,700 a month, revenue, from tho Astoria office, it does seem as though the companv could afford one solitary gns jet and not compel men to work all night by tho dim light of one ill smelling coal oil lamp. There was considerable comment yesterday aneut the tax list minus the allowed indebtedness, as published m these columns. The general con census ot opinion was, "I don't care how high the city assessment is put up, but 1 do want to see it equal." The board ot equalization will have considerable to do. -Yesterday John Butt came down from Olney, where he was wounded on Wednesday evening. Scott, Secretary. Sas the Oregon tan : "There is probably no railroad in the state in which local interest centers more strongly at present than that known as the Seaside division of the Astoria & South Coast railway. The few days of excessive heat have turned the thoughts of hundreds towards the beach and the satisfaction with which the completion of the Ilwaco railroad was greeted last year is duplicated in that of the completion of the Clatsop road this week. It is now safo to say that, Avith the increased facilities for "getting theie" in comfort everybody will get a sniff at the ocean this season who cares for the luxury of its bracing air." The ball to-night is given under the auspices of the general committee ot arrangements for the celebration of the Fourth, and is part of the pro gram of exercises for the dav. Danc ing will commence immediately after the display of firework", and every body is invited. An order h:is ben issued at the press censor's department in St. Petersburg that no telegrams can be either received or sent by the papers between six in the evening and eight' iu Hie morning. The only reason is that the officials or the bureau object to remain on duty at night time. Such a condition of affairs in Astoria would sadly interfere with tho dispatches and would constitute an obstacle that even the quadruples could not over come. A ST. X.OUIS PHYSICIAN.
