JULY 2, 1890 Ciiy&Htl CeHHty OMcial Paper. HEKur C. Bowes Bays that Cliauu cer & Itepew Trill bo the Republican candidate for president in 1892. Hexbx M. Stamey Las at last reached the climax o earthly glory. A London firm has notified him that it has named a brand of sausages in his honor. Stxsvex says if he could get 5,000 tiro-gallon jugs into the heart of Africa they would buy him 10,000 acres of land and 500 drives. One two-gallon jng "will make a man think he owns the earth provided it is loaded. There is some style about a chief executive like Gov. Ferry, of Wash ington. The state militia wanted an encampment, but couldn't wait for 11 the red tape of the circumlocution fBce. Gov. Ferry iiromntlv advanced 25,000 and the lx3's have had their ncampment Later on the governor nil get his $23,000 back, when the lilitary tax is levied. It appears that the live and pro gressive people of the southwest are Ihssapointed with the Centurv diction- try because it does not contain the rord ,ibazoo." Bazoo is a good Lstaudard word in the southwest, no lore to be sneered at or ignored than hcli words as dog and cat. "When a frlitician is said to "blow his bazoo," wry ouo knows what is meant In SeJalia, Mo., there is a paper called ho Bazoo, and it is a lively sort of paper, well printed, too. a The census has some surprises. Chicago, which was fourth in the list of populous cities in 1880, now stands t'XMud, outstripping Brooklyn and rinladelphia, though the second place I; a close contest between the Quaker ity and the city by the lake. The figures so far give Philadelphia 1,010,- 1050; Chicago 1,OS5,000. There are now four cities in the Union that have one million inhabitants. In 1870 there I were none, and hi 18S0 there was but one, New York. The census of the empire city this year gives 1,627,227. The insuperable dilemma of the communists is, that unless all pro perry rights were made illegal, the same causes which have created in equality before would create it again; and if they were made illegal, nobody would do any more work than they I could help, and the whole community would remain scarcely above the level of the brutes. Socialism shares the latter hern: if men are protected against the results of their folly or laziness or incapacity, and there is no reward for brain or brawn, who will undergo the painful training and sac rifice, and struggle against natural idleness and weakness, to cultivate their powers and put forth their ener gies? Too Late. Madam," said the grateful census enumerator, "you have replied court- isly and kindly to all my questions. rjfc UKirly every person 1 have Tnet since I began this work you have Iuot treated me as if I were an enemy and an intruder. You have answered satisfactorily all the questions as to -ice, physical condition, and owner- sluji of property. Your conduct meets my hearty approval, not only as a government ofiieer but as a citizen, and with your permission 1 will ask a question not down in niy list. Are jou engaged to be married to any any eody: "1 am, sir," replied the handsome widow, blushing and smiling. "I feared so," said the census-taker, with a sigh. And he pnt on his hat and went out into the cold world again, his faith in human nature restored but his heart broken. The Modern Way. Mrs. Cotlonback This book for Iwys says the. way to succeed in tins world is to do two dollars' worth of , work for one dollar. Mr. Cottonback ( inreat manufacturer) That writer is way off. The way to succeed is to hire men to do two dol lars' worth of work for one dollar, and then form a trust and sell it for live dollars. Puck Happy Hoosicrs. "Win. Tinuuons, postmaster of lda wtle. lad- writes: "Electric Bitters lias done more for me than all other medicines combined, for that bad feel ing arising from Kidney and Liver trouble." John Leslie, farmer and stockman of same place, says: "Find Electric Bitters to he the best Kidney and Liver medicine; made me feel like a new man." J. "V, Gardner, hardwaie merchant, same town, says: Electric Bitters is lust the thing for a man who is all run down and don't care whether he lives or dies; he found new strength, good appetite and felt just like he had a new lease on life. IPOTTU'-er db CO, Astoria, Oregon. Smart Squire. A good story is told of a certain lo cality in Tennessee where no news papers are taken and tho people "hears all they wants to know." A former citizen of this locality, living in Texas, wrote onie of his friends at his old home, and among other items of news stated that the immigrants were coming so fast they were eating all tho corn up. Tho person to whom this epistle was addressed did not comprehend the meaning of the term "immigrant'!," and inquired of all those he met if they knew what it was, but none could give him the desired information. It was finally deter mined to send to a certain squire in the neighborhood who presumed to know everything. The letter was read to him, and ho was asked, "What are immigrants?" The squire looked wise, crossed his legs, scratched his bead and replied: "It's n little animal between a 'pos sum and a coon." NEW TO-DAY. Aolicc to Tax layr.s.
