In the course of a recent address before the Thompson Scientific club, of Lynn, Mass., professor Elihn Thompson said: 'In the near future railways will be run by electricity; not the small local roads, I mean, but really the large ones connecting cities, and there is no reason why we should not expect higher speeds than we can attain at present with, our steam locomotives. There we have reciprocoting parts, parts that must be put into motion, stopped and reversed continually, whilo in the electric locomotive w nave the simple rotarv motion which is all we need and which makes it possible accordingly to run at a much higher rate of speed. Although the steam locomotive has been very much improved, yet it can hardly compare with the economv of stationary engines, placed where thev can have an abundant water supply for condensing purposes; we can, therefore, by employing stationarv engines and electric roads, do away with a great deal of unneccssary weight, and the moving parts being symmetrical, we can attain a much higher speed, say a hundred miles an hour. 'This would be a grand step for ward, which would save us a great deal of lime. It might even be pos sible to reach a speed of 150 miles an hour. I really think that if we could come back sifter another hundred years, this wonld be the speed of traveling: it simply depends upon finding the necessary method of ap plying sullieient power, and building the locomotives to suit, arrangements being adopted to keep the cars on the track." Commenting on these predictions, the Electrical World remarks: "It is pleasant to iiud one so competent to discuss engineering problems speaking so confidently of the near ap proach of electrical express trains. There arc still some Taint hearts in the ranks, still some over zealous cn tlmsitists who would storm the works that can only be taken by a regular siege; but the forces arc being marshaled, tho guns trained, the parallels daily worked nearer, and one line of defenses after another must surely fall. Think a moment, aud see what 300 miles an hour really means. Starting at New York, it means Philadelphia for a jaunt before breakfast, Boston a pleasant morning's trip, Chicago an easy night's ntu. And this is only one of the brilliihit probabilities that is brought to our notice." Bm-lilon'.s Arnica. Sfalvo.
