At exactly -1 o'clock this morning a quantity o tar and coal oil, which had been placed in tho hnll of tho steamer Wilson G. Hunt was fcc on fire, and the old Bteamcr that has done snch good service in her day, was in a few minutes a mass oE flames. The timber being dry, burnt like matches, and those present say it was the finest sight they ever witnessed. In about two hours after the first match was struck the fire began to go down, but a small flame has been issuing from the old hull all day. A peculiar fact that was noticed by the spectators, was the lettering on cither side of the steamer, which stood out in black letters long after the woodwork around them had burnt away. The boiler and shafts were still in the steamer and altogether about 200 tons of old iron will be taken out by her purchasers, Messrs. Cohen & Co., or San Francisco, who bought her for old iron. The Hunt was a faithful ser vant during her dayjPhaving at one time ran on the Sacramento river where she was considered the best boat on the coast at that time. Dnr ing the gold excitement in California the Hunt ran between San Francisco and Sacramento, a distance of 75 miles, for which trip the rate of SI a mile was charged. The miners going up and down used to amuoe themselves, so says an old Californian papor, by throwing ten cent pieces by the hand ful from one steamer to another and would often take charge of the steam ers and run one another on to the beach. In this sport the Hunt was generally the favorite as she was the strongest and fastest steamer on tho river. Since she was pnrchased by the Hudson Bay company she has run on almost all the routes around Victoria, and was in early days a favorito excur sion boat, the citizens very often chartering heron Sundays for trips around the island. She" wa? after wards bought by tho C. P. N. com pany, who, however, did not run her very long beforo she was placed on tho beach, where she ha laid ever since, being ttsed principally by a couple of families, who found in her a comfortable place of abode, until her demolishers commenced work on her.
