ASTORIA. ORIQON:
WEDNESDAY..
.JUNE 25.1800
City am OmttyOMciml Paper.
The federal immigration bureau has
sxranged that the steamship companies
shall pay for the care and food of the
immigrants who are detained at New
York for examination. Heretofore the
government has paid Ihese expenses.
Axotheh evidence of Astoria as
gaming metropolitan airs and fashions,
was afforded last night, by a company
of Portland and Port Townsend men,
headed by N.J. Levinson, securing a
franchise for the introduction of the
American district telegraph service in
this city.
N.ooxg the streets of this city, or
rather having signs at the corners of
all streets in the city limits, showing
the names of the streets, was a good
ordinance passed by the city council
last evening, and is another important
step towards the letter carrier service
sooatobe inaugurated for this city
by the postal department.
Gakadiax customs officers have
seised, at the island of Orleans, a
smuggling schooner, with eleven hogs
heads of whisky and thirty-three cases
of gin, and a boat containing four
barrels of whisky. They have also
seaed a large quantity of smuggled
whisky on the south shore. The con
fiscated goods will bo sold at auction
at Quebec.
The party of German sharpshooters,
Bumbering 150, who left New York
the other day to test their mettle in
oao of the greatest shooting matches
that has ever taken place, are sending
home good reports of their success.
The match is held at Pankow, a
suburb of Berlin, and 10,000 marks
aaen shoot for prizes whose aggregate
value is nearly 1,000,000 marks.
.-.. i
Over a quarter of a million dollars
will change hands to-day in New
York, at the close of the great race
between "Salvator" and "Teuny," two
of the fastest horses in the country.
The former is owned in California and
the other in the Empire state, and the
friends of both are betting heavily,
sokc New Yorkers betting on the Cal
ifornia horse, though they really de
sire to see the other win, aside from
their financial interest in the result.
A sham Chinese fraud in the shape
of a quack medicine business in several
large cities is being broken up. The
title of the concern is "Dr. Gun Wa."
The fraud consisted in the "doctor"
oaring all diseases. A very large
basinoss was done, owing to the
credulous people with whom "Gun
HW had to deal. Establishments
were at Denver, Kansas City, Detroit,
St Louis, Indianapolis, Baltimore and
Milwaukee.
Vasr Feliciana Parish, Lonis
iaaa, may claim the honor of the first
caosus return, its list having been filed
the 9th inst. The return is a very
significant one. It shows 2,178 whites
sad 12,367 negroes. There are G21
whites and 4,312 negro voters in the
parish, a total of 4,933 voters, but this
parish with G21 Democrats and 4,312
Republicans gave Cleveland in 1888
1,795 votes and Harrison 46, a total of
1,841 votes, which indicates that some
thing over 3,000 negroes failed to vote.
Ocr dispatches this morning con
tain an item of importance to Clatsop
ooasty in the allowing of something
like adequate amounts for surveying
vacant lands in this county, which
have thus fariemained unsurveyed b3T
reason of the impossibility of getting
aayooe to undertake the contractor
surveying heavily timbered land at
prevailing rates. With increased ap
propriations in this regard we may
expect to have the unsurveyed timber
krakin Clatsop county thrown open
to occupancy land the acquisition of
individual title.
The Portland Oregonian, the Seat
tle JPost-Iiit&ligcncer andtheTacoma
Zecfcer, during the past week, have
secured in their respective cities the
exclnnivoi franchise of the night report
of the United Press. Incidentally, it
xaay be of interest to state the fact
that Tax Mokxikg Astoriak has se
cured a mmiflar franchise for Astoria.
The other papers that have secured it
leal quite proud of it and it is prob
aWy a good bay. The Morkxxg As-
TOaiAX always gete the beet, regard
leas of twice. In purchasing the
UrnKed Press franchise, bought the
best; the aenriee began yesterday
aonuaff, ia quantity and quality
