One of the most unique of the re UHious ot this festive season was that of the Kew York newspaper men who reported the Johnstown flood disaster ia 1839. At Johnstown they were in soeae cases unable to get food, and in commemoration of this one of the saottoes at their banquet read: "We starred together, now we dine to gether.1 Incorporated with $25,000 Capital RealEstate and Insurance Brokers, Notary Public Conveyancers ly situated on the south swlc o Astoria is Prospect Park, it a liberal discount. For the first time in the world's history, probably, Catholics and Lutherans are firmly united and standing to gether against the rest of the world. This is the case in Illinois. The mat ter that has thus brought them together is the compulsory education law of that state. They object to the super vision it gives to public school boards over their private and parochial schools in the matter of deciding what shall constitute a sufficient education in the meaning of the law. According to tho latest English Blue Book, there are in Great Britain 490 tin-plate mills, employing about 500,000 hands. The total number of men employed in the British tin mines is 11,G27. The total amount of tin plate manufactured annually in Great Britain is 500,000 tons. The Corn wall mines produced in 18S5, 9,000 tons of tin, and in 1SS9 had only in creased to 9,300 tons. On the other hand, the Straits tin mines during the same period increased their output from 16,000 to 28,000 tons. The rate of wages paid in the Straits settlements for getting out tin is sixpence sterling a day, or 12 cents. MuiWArKEE was in a bad way for street railway service before the advent of electric cars. Nobody ever supposed that a street car could go so fast. The people looked with favor upon any thing that was to be faster than the male teams on the bob-tail cars. Tho result was the passage of ordinances allowing electric street-railway cars to nsa as fast as possible the faster the better was the general sentiment when the ordinances were passed. The result is that electric cars are now tearing through the city like a wild steer in a corn-field, and an ordinance will shortly be introduced which will regulate the speed of the cars, particu larly in the business section. The United States senate must be popularized or the government of the people will not endure. Devised in the beginning as a body in which states were to be represented, as an organization of wise and good men who would solemnly weigh all measures coming before them and as a conservative force in a government remarkable for ita checks and bal ances, it has ceased to hold in the federal system the place that was as signed to it. Many of its members represent- states no longer. They Botoriously represent railroads; mines, forests, mills and commercial com binations. Elected by the use of Money, they do not recognize any popular authority. They stand de fiantly for monopoly and privilege. Instead of being an organization of wise and conservative men, the senate is, as a whole, a body of -violent par tisans, impudent money-bags and vabservient tools of the rings and com bines that oppress the people. The seed of popularizing that house is imperative. There is a paper called the West Si4e published at Independence, in this state, which is edited by either a fool or a knave. Talking about the ke gubernatorial canvass, he, she or it says that Thompson was beaten for governor because he didn't "treat the oovntry press with consideration." That is, ho should have put coin into the oSoes of weakly newspapers, and yielded to the importunities of those who had all the inclination but none ot the ability to be blackmailers. This is iafamons, and in so writing, the creature in the West Side office in evMs the newspaper men of Oregon, who arc in the main clean, gentlemanly representatives of tho profession. Can it be that tho IFest Side would have lent its powerful aid to Thompson's election for solid and weighty consid erations? The fact that it talks as it does strongly justifies the implication tfcat it was disappointed in unsuccess ful application lor funds from the Be pet&c&n candidate for governor, and belongs to the happily small class who are Republicans for revenue only iii'iniiiitiiiiuiiw Will Have Railroad : Connection Sooner Because its owners are jiberal'and not afraid to give inducement! to RAILROADS, MOTOR LINES, or to any liefer by permisslonto L W, Case, Banker. Thompson was beaten because he is no politician; because he served in the legislature and made a record there; because ho is rich and was there fore antagonized by those who spend their money faster than they get it; because ho had a more than ordinarily popular man running against him; and because "he wasn't in it" He might have sluiced $100,000 through the offices of such sheets as tho West Side, and not got one thousand more votes thereby. The West Side owes the press of the state an abject apology. A Salt- Investment. Is 'one which is guaranteed to bring 3 ou satisfactory results, or In case of failure a return of purchase price.
