That iconoclast Mbna Caird, -who upset all notions o propriety by startling the ivorld ritli the question "Is Marriage a Failure?' is out in the NortJi American Review with another idea no less startling. She declares that all our sentiments, cus toms, laws and rites are merely the outgrowth of time and circumstance, and that there is no such permanent quality as "nature'" on which humanity seeks to base its likes, dislikes, whims and prejudices. 3klrs. Caird attacks the modern no tion that the foundation of society is the family, and that the father is head of the family. That the family, the god of modern society, is not a per manent institution at all, she quotes many authorities to prove. Our pres ent institutions are a developement of the patriarchal system, in which a given man was the head and assumed father of the tribe hence its dispotic ruler. But before the patriarchal age there was the ma tarchal age, in which woman was tho chief factor in the human family. She was the head, and relationship was traced only through her. Children seldom knew who their fathers were; a man's children were no more lo him than those of another man. "Women were of enormous import ance in the days of thin population, and men fell into tho practice of buy ing wives, From this practice dates the beginning of the patriarchal sys tem, and the downfall of woman, in the judgment of 3Mona Caird. If a man bought a wife, she was his prop erty, naturally, and her children were also his. Previous to this tho children bdonged exclusively to the mother, wbohad entire right over them. It appears that previous to tho beginning of the patriarchal system women "bossed" the men quite as much as, later, men did women, and men natur ally took sublime revenge, when in the course of time, it became their turn. Tho name Of Mrs. Caird's paper is: "The Emancipation of the Family." Ox tho river steamers between here and Portland and on the ocean steam ships between here and San Francisco there hve been recent reductions in the wagfa of cooks and stewards. An attempt to reduce tho wages of assist ant engineers meets with strong op position from the marine engineer's union, and is not likely to succeed. CONCERNING DR. DARRIX. The presence of Dr. Darrin in Port land is filled with interest in many particulars. When he first arrived he advertised very extensively, and the cry went up that there was some catch in it Then he cured one case that was considered hopeless, and surprise was felt After that the very worst cases in existence were given him as a test by all doubters. If he cures this one 1 will believe it, tho doubters echoed, and after treatment tho patient was as sound as a dollar. Then they gave him another-test case, and an other, and so on, but nearly all with the same result He effected a cure in nearly every instance. Then the doctor's terrible rush of patients began, and tho stream has been grow ing larger every day, numbering some of the best people in the state. A visit to the office of Dr. Darrin is certainly a curiosity as well as a wonder. Patients are carried in one day, and after a week's time, in stead of being carried there, they walk up the stairs as sprightly as young boys. What there is about him is cer tainly mysterious, for he has performed most remarkable cures, as the testi monials we have heretofore published have proved. Any one affected who has not visited the famous Dr. Darrin should not lose the opportunity to do bo at once. He will treat the worthy poor free of charge. etker List of Cares hy Drs. Darrin. Ed.
