?? s &) ht tlg twfora. ASTORIA. OREGON: WEDNESDAY. JUNE 18, 1800 air Catmtjr OfBcIal Paper. Wat Retd is coming to the sea sliore tiik time. He wants a fresh supply of s&sd. The spring salmon pack on the Sacramento is closed- It is just half -whit it -was in '89. LrvERrooii is the name of a new isehalem townsite. It is as largo in area as Iverpool, England, hut isn't all built up yet Fcxxr titles some publicatiens: Blazes is Uie name of a fire journal received- Plunder, Breezes, the Tom Cat, are also received. Astoria's greatest mistake is send ing so much money away for wha could and should be bought at home. However plenty the supply, a city that is always sending money out of its borders is never going to make itself iadependent of the practice. It is high time a beginning was made in this regard. A ookrespoxdext writes that he thinks a savings bank would be a good thing for Astoria. So it would. Rightly run, a savings bank is a safe andsuro way to accumulate money for the depositors. But an investment in Astoria property beats any savings bank. Try it, and see if it doesn't overtop any ordinary rate of interest M. m m Amid all the talk relative to the railroad situation it must be remem bered that no note of discouragement need ensue. It is but the common experience; the usual tiling; whether it be Astoria or New York, a local affair or a Vnnderbilt, the construc tion of a railroad is always a period of delay, complications, and settling of arrangements, that takes time, and time only, to straighten out "Write me down an ass," said Dog lery. A Spokane Falls Dogberry named Mount, who by a freak of popu lar vote, usurps the position of judge of the court, has written himself in the same strain. He is trying to convict editor Durham, of the Itcciew, of "contempt of court' because Durham called public attention to lax systems of sleepy justice. Durham did his daty and deserves endorsement Tfce Hew Discovery. You have heard your friends and neigh bors talking about it Xou may your self be one of the many who know from personal experience just how good a tiling it is. If you have ever tried it, you arc one of its staunch friends, because the wonderful thing about it is, that when once given trial, Dr. King's New Discovery ever after holds a place in the bouse. If you have never used it Rd should be afflicted with a cough, cold or any Throat, Lung or Chest tremble, secure a bottle at once and give it a fair trial. It is guaranteed every tifae,or money refunded. Trial Bottles Free at J. V. Conn's Drugstore. ADVICE TO MOTHERS. Mns. Wixslow's Sootiuno Svnur should always be used for children teething. It soothes the child, softens the gums, allays all pain, cures wind cliolic and is the best remedy for diar-rhasa.Twenty-fivc cents a bottle. Tkc Hoffman Ileusc Ciar. A peculiar style of advertising," which still exists in many towns and rural districts, is the "card of thanks." After a man has passed through some severe tribulations, such us the illness and death of a near relative, he inserts in the local paper a card, formally thanking his friends for their kind at tentions. The Houston, Tex., Trib une thinks that the business was rather overdone by a man who caused a card to be inserted thanking the undertaker "for the pleasant and satisfactory manner" in which that functionary buried his wife.
