It is a grejit good thing to love one's town and to serve it, as one in a large relation may love and serve one's country. Eoal loyalty to couniry must begin at home, and he who can not unite with his neighbors to serve the community wherein ho lives, and do so gladly, is a poor patriot at best and under all conditions. The Salem Journal has never tired of saying this, and it hopes it never may. When one finds he is out o sympa thy with his town, and can only say a good word for it coupled with an apol osj, he ought to get out If he cannot find a congenial town on the face of the earth, he might look for such a place elsewhere and meanwhile serve his race best by living in the utmost possible retirement. Many people fall into a sort of un conscious habit of growling and do not mean anything bad by it. It is as dangerous for a stranger to take sides with them as it is for the average mor tal to interfere in a quarrel between husband and wife. But it is a miser able habit Such people make them selves particnlary independent The town is precisely like the indiuduaL The individual has about all he can do to get along under his own loads aad he wants help and encourage ment from those going his way, and who are identified with him in inter est So with the interests to care for. And it needs all the pluck, all the en ergy, all the co-operation and helpful ness its citizens can provide and bring to bear. Every man is a part of his town. The town embraces the fortunes, and in some measure at least takes on the character of the man. So loyalty is in the line of all well-shaped human na ture. Therefore it is right to say that the man who does not stand up for his town is in some way dwarfed. There xs something wrong about him. His fellows will pass their judgment upon him, and the chances are that while he may add to the discomfort of others, he will not escape making him self unhappy. Society is so ordered that its health f olness rests on a basis of mutual de pendence, and therefore individual members of society can only discharge their benefits of its order by doing their part to help others. The suc cess of life is in the measure of good pcrvice one may render. All honor able, praisworthy, lasting compensa tions lie in the direction of services, and not in the direction of selfishness and purely self-seeking. It is hard for many people to appreciate this fundamental fact in social economy, but the truth of it is established by all the history of the world. It is healthful to cultivate a lore of one's town and of its people and of all its interests. It enlarges one's heart, one's powers, one's capacity for serv ice, and if he has strength to spare, the schooling widens his vision so that he is enabled to look out into the world and see how innumerable are the doors that lead to the brotherhood of man, inviting to many avenues of usefulness. There is no lack of genuine leader siup leadership that invites confi dence, that promotes respect, that promises helpfulness to others. The spurious article is inevitably short lived. The character that wears, that grows in confidence and csteein, is the genuine character that rcMly makes neighborship and honest co-partnership. Work for your town, then. If jou cannot trust your fortunes with it, it is your plain duty to get out Don't bo a deadweight Don't throw jourself in the way of others and insist that the only way for the procession to move is to run over yon or to carry you bodily. Wherever jon may be, get right into the traces and pull. It will make you strong. In a huudred years the United States has spent $93,000,003 on a lighthouse establishment During this year the amount will be $3,500,000. It is customary for statesmen lola jaent in congress the decline and neg lect of American shipping interests. According to the British Admiralty Ikte, the United States now ranks second in its water tonnage of all the countries or the world. And this statement excludes yachts and vessels of less than 100 tons. ''Britannia rales the waves," of course. Every body knows that The British ton s&ge is nearly one-half of that of the satire world. That of the United States is only one fifth of Great Brit ain's, but it leads all other countries. Coxgrbss is considering the expedi ency of constructing a ship canal twenty feet in depth, around Niagara falls. One of those proposed will be IS miles in . length, and cost $23,000, 030. Such n proposition has often been mentioned, and no doubt it will evtsatually bejaccomplished. .tSKHHtSSUUIUIEUUIH v? Because its owners are OLIVER STEWABT, Pres. G. S.
