Anion? the most interesting of the
many Edison inventions now to bo
seen at the exhibition oE the Woman's
Exchange, at the Lenox Lyceum, is
the autographic telegraph. Tho object
of this invention is io reprodnce in one
city the exact counterpart of a mes
sage -written by the sender in a distant
city. There are situations in -which it
is desirable to receive not only the
message itself, but also the hand-
wnimg in wnicn it -was in
scribed, and this is faithfully repro
duced by the autographic telegraph.
One of the secrets of its reliability-is
the -way in which the blank upon
which the message is -written is pre
pared. Tn nearly sill previous sys
tems of telegraphic facsimile repro
duction the blanks have been pre
pared by writing upon a metallic
surface with insulating ink. Tn the
aawyer sstem me paper was in
scribed Willi a kind ot copying ink,
then dusted over with shellac, or
some similar substance reduced
to a line iowder, and
placed on a warm plate. The heat of
the plate caused the melting of the
shellac dust adhering to tho inscrip
tion, which was thus transferred. All
these methods wero found in practice
to possess disadvantages which mili
tated seriously against their general
use. In the Edison autographic tele
graph tha message is written with a
pencil on specially prepared paper.
This paper is soft and spongy, and the
pressure of the pencil makes, a deep
indention in it. The next step is
tho transmission. Tho message is
placed on a cylinder revolved by an
electric motor, which is in synchron
ism with a sjmilarmotor and apparatus
at the other end of the line, the cylin
der of the latter, however, being of
metal, covered with a sheet of chem
ically prepared paper. A delicately
adjusted spring is placed against the
revolving drum at the sending end.
and as tho spring or wire passes over
the paper and falls into the inden
tations produced in the message it
closes the circuit at the distant end of
tho line, where an iron spring or wire
decomposes the .sohtlum in the chem
ically treated paper (tn the revolving
drum at the eaet moment of making
the circuit. As the pens at each end
ot the line are caueu to move down
ward a trillo at each revolution of the
drum, the entire message it; accurately
reproduced. .V. . Erninu Post.

The Elko Free Prt.ss has tho fol fel fol
eowing: That was a laughable joko on
the young couple who were ont walk
ing a Sunday or two ago wheeling
their iirst lorn in a new baby carriage.
They noticed people smile as they
passed bv and wondered what was the
matter. "The wire finally said, "I'll
walk ahead a little ways and you see
if there's anythiug the matter with my
dress." Nothing to Miiile nt there, the
husband called her back and said,
"Now let me walk ahead and you see
if my pants arc bursted," and he
walked on wheeling the carriage before
him. A qniet littlo laugh brought the
husband to a sudden halt before he
had gone twenty feet, and he blushed
all over as his wife pointed to the
trade mark on the back of the baby
buggy. It read ,!Onr Own Make."
They" had forgotten to tear it off when
the buggy was unpacked.
