Time to Think.
'lt takes time to think," sajs a
writer on pbyscholoRy in The Nine
teenth Century, and'he goes deep into
psychic science to prove his proposi
tion. But it was hardly necessary to
do that; it seems self-evident. This
fact, however, gives one of the most
important reasons avIiv the work day
should be shortened in at least those
trades and occupations that require
close Application. Work in itself does
not harm the worker, but it is the con
tinuous use of one set of faculties that
wears out the human mind and body.
The division of labor does not imply
that the same person must do the same
tiling always.
A change of employment is really a
rest to mind and body. The clerk,
the bookkeeper, the compositor, the
editor, all those of sedentary aud light
employments, find a relief in the
gymnasium, or at some hard, muscular
work. "When we become civilized, ind
industry and business are based upon
rational and humane principles, it will
be easy for the individual to change his
employment aud cultivate all of his
faculties. A shorter work day does
not mean that less work, on the whole,
will be done. It means more time de
voted to some other employment than
the one to which the present system
ties tho workmau.
It means that he will do moro think
ing than he does now and it is work
to think. More time to think will re
sult in better methods of producing
the good things that go to make up
our comforts and luxuries. The de
gree to which it is possible for mind to
predominate over matter and tho
forces of nature we may never know,
but that it has done so to a marvelous
extent already we do lenow. If those
who use these forces and matter in the
production of good things have more
time to think the utilities which result
from these forces may bo multiplied a
thousand fold. -So in a short time the
increased cost of production that may
arise from shortening tho working
time in one direction will undoubtedly
be more than made up by improved
methods of production.
Tho practical results in the im
provement of the worker from lessen
ing the hours of work arc seen in
those traded where the shorter day
has U?e:i aJoiiied, notably among the
cigarmakers, stonecutter?, bricklayers
and bakers. The vorkiug time of the
printer has; boon materially reduced
in many parts of the country. Other
tradesmen, too numerous to mention,
have done likewise, and experience
has proved that on the whole it has
resulted in giving steadier employ
ment throughout the year; in employ
ing more people, especially in those
trades where the work is largely done
by hand: in :i tendency to raise wages;
in reducing intemperance aud crime,
aud in raising the general intelligence.
It has given them more time to think,
aud by thinking they have concluded
that it iays to do right.

Feminine Thrust and Reply.
Seated in a street car near two
sweet young things, who were full of
the beautiful ingeniousness of girl
hood, the following portion of their
conversation reached me:
"O, Amy, I have a frightful rip in
my riding habit, and forgot to have it
mended. Lend me vours to-morrow
will you?''
"Yes, indeed, dear." (With empha
sis and the utmost sweetness). "But
I'm awfully afraid you'll find it too
tight; I wear a number twenty-one
corset you know."
"Yes." (A slight but very impress
ive pause) "I think perhaps I can get
it together, though; I wear a nine
teen." It was clean cut as the stroke of a
razor; beatifully given and beautifully
taken. Both faces preserved their
calm and placid expression, a new
topic of conversation was started al
most instantlyandjl leaned back in my
corner and marvelled at my own sex.
