Recently the Australian ballot sys tem "ras "given a trial at the municipal clectioa-at-SL Paul. The experiment was coppletclv successful. It re quired -a-ioea-observer, indeed, says the Pioneer Press, to discover that a city of over "200,000 inhabitants was m ibe.&jv&o a municipal election, and that, too, more exciting than its predecessors for many years. No crowfcyw) -excitement and no drunk cncssVerclhe marked features of the day, whose character was told alone by tkcDOcasional booths, to whose sdes rere tacked maps and election pl&csrds. Itisilike creditable to the repre senUbjg.jf all parties that they tried to follow the spirit as well as the text oi thencw hxw, instead of attempting to uaaperat In. its action. ThaTObsr after giviug his name re ceived his ballot, which he marked sccord5s2"to the dictates of his own judgqjenl in the privacy of one of the booths. .Having folded it he handed ittotfee-juclge of the election, who, having -called the voter's name, de posiftiQlzg ballot in the box. This was att'Eie anachinen- necessary for the elector; As a result of careful tcgjsfrafion but Tew votes werechal leageX in ilie entire city, and only a comparatively small number of ballots were Tetrrrnod xlefaced or injured to the judges oflhe election in exchange f:r others, .Rjfhaps as noticeable a tact sy-is mat a very small per cent of "voters asked for assistance in xnaldB their ballot. Thejndges of election uniformly gavetke wannest praise to the new system. Many of its opponents have lissed their opposition upon a belief that its operation was slow. It was foantilkit in -the- most crowded dis tricts all the booths were never occu pied at one time, and the rush which under" ihoold-system was the invariable accomgMiiment of certain hours, was catireV .obviated. The returns also were kwwn -t an earlier hour than nsaaVas the conditions of balloting made It extremely easy for the judges to tshaX&ic:Uic xcsults. Good streets in a city, and good roads from the country, leading into a city, arc essential requisites. In this respect Astoria certainly is lacking. Tiiere are very few horses here, for the size of the place, and one reason is there are no good drives in this vicinity. There should be an im provement in this respect. UsrsCAii activity is prevalent all over Washington, and Oregon needs to sroase herself, or her younger sister w31 surpass her in population and wealth. The railroad interest there is very active, and lines are branching ot in all directions. Is CeRSHjnption Incurable? Read the fottewing: Mr. C. U. United States census enumerator Geo. 1L Schoonmaker is out of danger. The kidneys have not left his feet; no one has willed him a fortune, and his best girl still bestows her attentions upon another fellow. Yet Schoon maker is happy and thereby hangs a novelette. In the district which superintendent Jenkins assigned) Schoonmaker, reside several score of heathens whose knowledge of American customs is limited to feasting upon boiled rice and charging "tloo dlola" for leaving the scents of ex pectoration upon divers articles of male and female apparel. All of these citizens decidedly object to telling superintendent of the census Porter whether they are afflicted with a chronic disease, or how long it is since they got out of jail. They are, however, willing to inform Uncle Sam's agents that, not owning any real estate, they cannot mortgage it Schoonmaker ha3 now been work ing four days and all that he has done has been to dodge the washing irons of irate Chinamen who think him too inquisitive. "Whenever he approaches an almond-eyed son of the rat-eating eaipire, the latter locks himself behind bolts as if afraid that he is about to be jailed for playing fan-tan. A con versation something like this gener ally eccurs: Schoonmaker "What's your name, John? The Ileathen No clan sabee. Schoonmaker How long you been in this country? Heathen Dion know. Nbth flel low done it torn tloomollow. Bloss, he here then. Schoonmaker How old are yon? John Lemmo lone. No sabee. Go to hellee. Then the Chinaman grabs an axe, and Schoonmaker hops, skips and jumps out of sight, as his pedal ex tremities are too lender for him to run. Schoonmaker, at the rate of 2 cents per name, was earning four mills every day, so on "Wednesday he wrote to "Whatcom requesting supervisor Jen Idns to suggest an easier method for his labor. In reply he received a document which is 32 inches wide and 12 feet long. It is a letter of recom mendation from the Chinese consul general at San Fran cisco commanding all followers of the late Mr. Confucius to answer any questions which Mr. Shoonmaker may put to them, and telling all Chinese that "Shoon" is a gentleman who never refuses a drink and changes his underclothing once a week. Shoonmaker expects from now on to make living wages out of his posi tion, and that is why he is feeling happy. Port Tonsrd Leader. Kibiii tioing Ont of Fashion. Ill the rural regions of our country, as well as of England, the favorite amusement at a social gathering of young persons is, or until recently has been, a succession of "kissing games," wherein the most modest girl of the company was saluted by every swam who chose with as little embarrass ment as if he had been her mother. But even in the rural districts this sort of thing is passing away, and the permitted realm of the kiss is narrow ing day by day. Mrs. Frank Leslie, Fully Explained First Citizen There goes a success ful man. He's a credit to the community. They tell me that fifteen years ago he came to this town with out a dollar and that now he's worth 75,000. Second Citizen Yes; I remember it well. He was my bookeeper a while and afterward my partner. You see, I struck this town twenty years ago with $75,000, and now I haven't got a cent. Merely a coincidence, just a coincidence.
