a city of over "200,000 inhabitants was

respect Astoria certainly is lacking.

there are no good drives in this

provement in this respect.

over Washington, and Oregon needs
to sroase herself, or her younger sister

wealth. The railroad interest there is
very active, and lines are branching

The kidneys have not left his feet; no
one has willed him a fortune, and his
best girl still bestows her attentions
upon another fellow. Yet Schoon
maker is happy and thereby hangs a
novelette. In the district which
superintendent Jenkins assigned)
Schoonmaker, reside several score of
heathens whose knowledge of American
customs is limited to feasting
upon boiled rice and charging "tloo
dlola" for leaving the scents of ex
pectoration upon divers articles of
male and female apparel. All of these
citizens decidedly object to telling
superintendent of the census Porter
whether they are afflicted with a
chronic disease, or how long it is
since they got out of jail. They are,
however, willing to inform Uncle Sam's
agents that, not owning any real
estate, they cannot mortgage it
Schoonmaker ha3 now been work
ing four days and all that he has done
has been to dodge the washing irons
of irate Chinamen who think him too
inquisitive. "Whenever he approaches
an almond-eyed son of the rat-eating
eaipire, the latter locks himself behind
bolts as if afraid that he is about to
be jailed for playing fan-tan. A con
versation something like this gener

Then the Chinaman grabs an axe,
and Schoonmaker hops, skips and
jumps out of sight, as his pedal ex
tremities are too lender for him to run.
Schoonmaker, at the rate of 2 cents
per name, was earning four mills every
day, so on "Wednesday he wrote to
"Whatcom requesting supervisor Jen
Idns to suggest an easier method for
his labor. In reply he received a
document which is 32 inches wide and
12 feet long. It is a letter of recom
mendation from the Chinese
consul general at San Fran
cisco commanding all followers of
the late Mr. Confucius to
answer any questions which Mr.
Shoonmaker may put to them, and
telling all Chinese that "Shoon" is a
gentleman who never refuses a drink
and changes his underclothing once a
week.
Shoonmaker expects from now on
to make living wages out of his posi
tion, and that is why he is feeling
