TiiiiByjr.f Everj' one remembers how the fish ing season was delayed because of the desire of the fishermen to receive SL25, while the canners wished to pay only 73 cents. In an endeavor to arrange matters amicably, over a month passed away, and no fish were caught until the first week in May, when work commenced at one dollar per fish. The dullness of the market, the small demand for good salmon, and the large amount of Alaska salmon which flooded the market at low prices, has been the cause of the bus iness decreasing for a number of davs. Some of the canneries have closecl, ana most or rue balance are running slow and light, for the canners felt that they could not afford to pay one dollar per fish. Last night a meeting of the union was held at the opera house, which was largely attended, and at which there was a full discussion of the situation. After careful consideration, the union felt compelled by the force of -.existing circumstances to lower the price, and reluctantly dropped to 73 cents per fish. MARINE NEWS AND NOTES. Trials of n Census Man. The census enumerators in this citv and county are having a great time. A week has passed by, and but little has baen done. One of them, L. E. Selig, demands an interpreter. There is considerable telegraphic correspond ence going on between him and the supervisor of this census district Yesterday he got the follewing: Eugene, June 7, 1890. L. E. Selig ; Can't accept your res ignatien: you were aware of the situ- ation before qualifying: j-ou should proceed with work to the best of your ability. Refusal or neglect to serve makes you liable to serious penalties: See instructions, pages three and feur: have received no reply from telegram to Washington about interpreter. John KekiY, Supervisor of Census, First Oregon District Selig telegraphed in reply that it would be impossible for hun to get correct answers or any other kind of answers to the questions without an interpreter to explain to those who didn't understand English what was asked, and that the best thing Kelly could do would be to accept his resig nation and to appoint a Russian Finn if he couldn't have an interpreter fur nished him. The time is passing, and it is imperative that the work should be done and Astoria's population fully and correctly estimated. The steam tender Manzanita left here last Wednesday evening at 7 o'clock and arrived at Destruction is land, off the Washington coast-atfifSO" nextmominir. From that tima-nntil Friday noon the sections of the new iron light-house were beincr unloaded. it having all to bo taken ashore in small boats where a powerful steam derrick hoists it up on the shore, and thenco it is hauled on a tramwav bv steam power to the place where it is to be located. At 150 p.m. of Fridav. the steamer left the island and proceeded up the coast, arriving atTeah bay at 7:15 the same evening. A whistling buoy was then set in place of one which was carried away in a storm several months ago. Leaving there at eight o'clock p. m., the steamer started back for Astoria and at 8:45 when Tatoosh island was abeam, the steamer Umatilla was met, on her way from San Francisco to Paget sound ports, just about entering the straits of Juan de Fuca as the Man zanita was coming out into the ocean. Yesterday morning early the steamer DolpJiin was met between Cape Hancock and Shoalwater bay, bound for the latter, and at 1130 yes terday morning, the Manzanita passed up by here with all sails set, and landed at buoy depot, returning to foot of Main street wharf in the afternoon. To-morrow she will take on another load of the iron light-house, and go back with it to the island, if the weather is favorable. Destruction island contains about twenty-five acres of rich, black soil, nearly level, no part of it being over seventy feet above the sea, and is situ ated three miles from the mainland, about ninety-five miles from here. It has been a fog station, with one of Brown's fog sirens, and two men are there as keepers. When the machin ery was put in it was found that tit could not be used, as one of the tanks for holding water was defective. That will be remedied -when the lighthouse is erected and more keepers will be stationed three, making a complete light and fog station. The fine weather of Thursday and Friday made the work of unloading the iron sec tions comparatively easy. A Ride on the Road. Tho Vett Who Will Compose Oregon's Legislative Bodies. Where the Slaterial for the filory Feminine Toilet Came From. of Manager Johnson, of J. H. Smith, contractor, came down from Portland yesterday morning, and in company with H. B. ThielBen. The dis tance to Stanley's 16 miles, was made in thirty-three minutes, with twi stoppages. The road was found to be in fair condition. A bridge is built across Ohanna creek. The men are waiting for the rails to lay the re maining mile and a half to Grimes'. These rails left St. Louis, Mo., nine days ago, unde'r a contract from the TJ. P. Co., to deliver them at Astoria, inside of twenty days, The party re turned at four, yesterday afternoon. The "Kitty" ia Tronlile. Deputy United States Marshal Barry has libeled the bark Kitty, in a suit brought by Andrew Kan & Co. of Portland, for damages to cargo on her last trip from Japan and Chinas This will necessitate something of a, delay in her departure, and prevent uer iroin leaving until a settlement is effected, or the case decided in court A QUAKER'S DOZEN. The glory of a woman's toilet is her hat To her it is dearer and of more concern than even the fold, the tex ture, the cut and the make of the robe. Her hat is the cynosure of tho eyes of all her femalo acquaintances, the at tractive point which brings the gaze and criticism of her gentlewoman friends. Curiously enough, however, there is nothing about her dress that is more of a mystery to her. From tho tin of her nicelv-fittinsr shoes to the top of her well-shaped hat the best informed woman of the world knows more about every article that goes to make up her toilet than she does about the headgear which, next to a woman's hair, 13 ner true glory. Of course every woman is aware of the texture of a felt hat bnt this arti cle is intended to solve the mystery surrounding straw hats. What are women's straw hats made of? It seems a simple Question, and yet it is not one that the ordinary wo man can well and truly answer. The braids are all imported; many from China. If I were to tell a young lady that the hat she wore was made of straw from the plantation of the emperor of China, I doubt if she would believe me, and yet it is so. Some of this braide is called Neapolit an and is wide and coarse. The straw of what i3 known as Neapolitan pear ledge is found in Chu Foo. It grows tall and the top is fine and tho bottom coarse, one stalk thus giving two or more kinds of braid. Venetian grows tall, and is the opposite of Neapolitan pear-ledge, whose base is coarse. The top of the Venetian is coarse and called mottled braid. The center is somewhat finer, and of the stalks which are nearest the ground is made tho fine Venetian braid. Chicago Trib une. Only tlioso who havo suffered from salt rheum in its worst form know the agonies caused by this disease. Hood's Sarsapa rilia has had great success In curing salt rheum, and all affections of the blood. " I owe the gratitude to Hood's Sarsapa rilla that ono would to his rescuer from a Burning Building! with salt rheum, and had to leave off work altogether. Sly face, about the eyes, would be swollen and scabbed, my hands and a part of my body would bo raw sores for weeks at a time, my flesh would seem so rotted that I could roll pieces from between my fingers as large as a pea. One physician called it type pncrm and gave me medicine accord- UIOUI I Ingly; but salt rheum cannot bo cured in that way. Finally I bought a bottle ol Hood's Sarsaparilla. It helped me so much that I took two moro bottles, and was Entirely Cured LSLS with salt rheum since. I also used Hood's OliTe Ointment on the places affected.
