Fifty years have elapsed since the introduction ot the modern postal stamps, for it was in the year ISiO that the British postal administration es tablished the svstem. The first form of the postage signs were envelopes on which was printed a black stamp, with the words "Postage One Penny," and others on which was printed a red stamp with the legend "Postage Two Pence." Some montlis later the ,gummcd stamps to be pasted upon trie envelopes were introduced. The inventor of the postal stamps was the bookseller James Chalmers of Dundee. The English system was soon imitated by other countries in lMd by JBraziJ, Ueueva and Zurich, in 1S15 bv Finland and Bale, in 1816 by the United States, in 1S50 by Spain, Austria, Switzerland, Prussia and some other German states, in 1851 by Denmark, Sardinia and To3cana, iilSo2 by the postal administration of Thurn and Taxis, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and most of the Italian states, iu 1853 by Portugal, in 1854 by Norway, in 1855 by Sweden, in 1857 by Mexico, in 1861 by the united Italy and by Greece, in 1863 by Turkey, and in 1871 by Japan. The stamping by hand was super seded afterwards by copper and steel engravings. The postal stamps of the United States of 1869, those of Portu gal from 1870 to 1875, and those of Brazil from 1S78 to 1879 are perfect littlo works of art. The number of different kinds of postal stamps circulating at present is about 6,000, more than half of which belong to Europe, while a complete collection of all kinds of. stamps ever issued wonld contain about 10,000 spe cimens. Most stamps represent a very small nominal value, most of them ranging from one cent to $1.25; but there are some stamps printed in England at 5 sterling each. The United States have a stamp for 20 sterling, i. e, S100. Postal stamp collectors will be in terested to leam that for 2.50,350 different stamps can bo bonght, for about 12 a colleclion of 1,000 stamps can be obtained, and those who want to invest from SCO to 70 can procure about 2,000 stamps. Those, however, who want to go beyond that number have to pay dearly for every single stamp. The catalogue of postal stamp curios published by Paul Siotzow at Berlin, mentions the price for a stamp of the Philippine islands, bearing the legend 5 cuartos nnd issued in 1854, at 200 marks, i. e. $50; a stamp of Switzer land for -1 centimes, printed black upon white, sit 100 marks ($25); Geneva 5x5 centimes at 150 marks (37.50), etc. Themo3t notable old postal stamps are two stamps of Mauritius, the one a penny stamp, red, and the other a two pence stamp, blue, which at present cost together 400 marks or $1,000. Postal stamp collectors, however, are warned to beware of imitations. Such imitations are manufactured at present in large quantities, and some are so skill fully executed ;is to deceive all those who have not made a special study of stamps. Iiiflilcns Aruica Salve.
