In an ac count by the correspondent of Enyin eeriny, it is stated thai the founda tions, which arc on circular wells, all go down some fifty-five feet below the bed of the river which the aqueduct crosses. The fifteen arches are divided by abutment piers into groups of five spans each, the abutment piers have each two rows of wells and the single piers one row. Thanks to the sim ple expedient of building the work in a pit dug out of dry land through which the river was subsequently diverted, the work of sinking the 2G8 wells went on without interruption throughout the year. It is probable that no other well-sinking job has been so systematically worked out and, indeed, in the beds of active rivers there is no such chance of care ful administration; for as the river rises and falls, the conditions to be dealt with change completely. The aqueduct carries the Lower "Ganges canal across what is known locally as a nnddee, i. e., a watercourse that draws its water supply from the plains of Ilindostan and not like what arc here known as the rivers proper from the mountains. The canal that goes over the top draws, in ordinary years, a revenue from the laud it waters of some 50,000 sterling a year, and a work that secures that revenue at a cost of 300,000 sterling lias much need to be pushed on with the utmont expedition. Fortunately, owing to favorable rainfall during the four ears that the aqueduct wa3 under reconstruction, the loss of revenue actually experienced was but a tenth of the total. Had the case been the other way, the loss of food crops in even one year would have far overtopped the price of the work. Darby's Pniphylatie Fluid. Use it in every sick-room. Will keep the atmosphere pure ami wholesome; removing all bad odors from any source. Will destroy all Disease Germs, infec tion from ail Fever., and all contagious diseases. The eminent physician .1. The question has often been discuss ed whether or not any water passed over the bar during the rise of the tide. The other day we mentioned the mat ter to one of the Government survey ing corps, and his opinion on the mat ter was: '"Ordinary tides rise to a height on the bar, of about seven feet, above mean low water in the river, which backs the water up entirely. In other words no water passes over the bar, when the tide is higher than the stage of water in the river. But at the pres ent time when the river is about seven feet above low water mark, my opin ion is, though I have made no study of the matter, that the tide has no in fluence on water above its own level. Hence, whatever difference there ex ists between the height of the tide and the water in the river, just that amount crosses the bar." CaUilamet Gazette. ISucIticu's Arnica Salve.
