should be easily raised. But there
cannot be much delay about the tiling.

Those schemes should not be allowed
to end in just talk. A good newspaper,
a good theater, a hotel are three prime
factors in building up a city. The As
toriax appears every day in the week,
every day in the year, without inter inter
misseon: the theater is being brought
ap to existing requirements: how
about that hotel.
WASHDfGTON' papers say that they
expect to see Washington ahead of
Oregon in wealth as illustrated by the
forthcoming census returns. It is not
improbable. Washington has no law
taxing mortgages or allowing exemp
tion of indebtedness in ;issessofs
reports. Oregon has both, and those
twin fetters of progress arc enough to
cripple any commonwealth.

effort as editor of the Port Towuscnd
Morning Leader. W. L. Jones has
sold that paper: in his farewell he
rays that those eight mouths have
broken him down in health, and
tbat his success has been purchased at
the price of shattered nerves and an

We have heroes all around us, ready

There was a fire at Seattle last Thurs
day morning, burning eleven buildings
containing lodging houses. Here is
an episode of the dreadful scene, from
a dispatch relating the progress of the
fire: "Among the many melo-drama-tic
incidents at the fire was the rescue
ot W. W. Corbetl and family, a Chi
cago newspaper man, by Wm. Barber,
of Tacoma, who proved himself a ver
itable hero. While the flames were at
their height Barber noticed the woman
holding a babe in her arms in the
third-story window of the Pioneer
house. lie ran up the stairs
adjoining the house until he
raeched the third story, where he
found an alley eight feet wide and
foriy feet deep between the two houses.
Without an instant's hesitation he
sprang across the chasm and caught
the window sill opposite. Groping
through the smoke and flame, he
found lh room, grabbed the woman
and threw her on the mattress held by
men beneath. He next lowered the
child down, then seized 3Ir. Corbett
and saved him the same way, though
the man was dazed by the smoke and
resisted his rescuer. Then the brave
man swung himself out, lauding safely
on the mattress, amid the cheers of the
immense crowd, who watched the
thrilling rescue with horror depicted
on their faces. If Barber had fallen
in his leap from window to window he
woidd undoubtedly have been dashed
to pieces. It was one of the most gal
lant deeds performed in the year."
