The following from an exchange concerning the habits of the salmon is of interest at this time: From the time the salmon enters freshwater it begins to deteriorate in flesh and undergoes remarkable changes in form and colors. Arriving as a shapely fish, clad in shining silvery scales, and -with its flesh orange or red, it plays around for a little while between salt water and fresh, j and then begins its long fast andi wearisome journey. No food is 'taken, and there are shoals, rapids and some-1 times cataracts to be surmounted, but t the salmon falters not, nor can it be ' prevented from accomplishing its mis- ( mission by anything but death or an impassable barrier. Its body soon becomes thin and lacerated, and its , tins are worn to shreds by contact with sharp rocks. In the" males a great hump is developed on the back behind the head, and' the jaws are lenuthed. and distorted so that the mouth can not be closed. The wounded fish are soon attacked by the fungus and progress from bad to worse until they become unsightly. In the meantime the body colors will have varied from dark gray in the humpback, with the lower parte milky white, to a brilliant vermUlion in the red salmon, contrasting beauti fully with the rich olive green of its head. The excessive mortality of salmon during the ascent or the streams and on the breeding grounds has led to the belief that none of the spawning fish leave the fresh water alive. There is a substantial basis for this view in the long rivers, and it is doubtless true that a journey of five hundred miles or more is followed by the death of all the salmon concerned in it. The nest is a very simple affair, or it may be wanting. The humpback straggles and crowds up a few rods from the sea, and deposits its eggs between crevices in the boulders covering the bottom, or sometimes they are strewn in thin layers over a large area iu shallow water without covering of any kind. The king salmon seeks the headwaters of streams, and excavates a nest in clear, shallow, gravely rapids. The dog salmon spawns in small rivers and creeks. The silvery salmon does not usually ascend streams to a great dis tance, and I have seen it return to salt water alivo after spawning. The nest is made among gravel and stones from which all dirt and slime has been removed. Both sexes in all the species take part in the building operations, and the male especially guards the nest. Turner states that the silver salmon use their snouts in collecting material for their nests, and he has seen them with the nose worn off completely. The red salmon spawn aronnd the shores of deep, cool lakes, and in their small tributaries, xireferring waters whose highest temperature rarely exceeds 55 degrees. The nest is a shallow circular pile of stones about as large as a man s hand, and some of them smaller. The eggs are placed in the crevices between the stones. The en emies of the salmon are numerous. Small fish called sculpius, or miller's thumbs, swarm in the nests and eat large quantities of the eggs and young salmon. Gnlls, terns, loons and other birds gorge themselves with the ten der fry. When the young ap proach the sea they must run a cruel gauntlet of flounders, scnlpins and trout, and in the ocean a larger and greedier horde confronts them. The adults are attacked bv seals and sea lions. Before they have fairlv en tered the rivers huge nets are haul ing them to the shore almost every minute of the day during six days in a week. "When they return to their spawning grounds bears are waiting to snatch them from the water and devour them alive. The salmon, itan- I pears, would have been vastly better oh nan it never ueen uorn in iresn water where its dangers are cumula tive and deadlv. Take It Before Breakfast. Remedy Dr. llcnlcj's English Dandelion Tonic. Re lieves constipation, sharpens the appe tite and tones up the entire S3'Stem. Get the genuine from your druggist for 1, and take according to directions. Final Proof Notice. Considerable complaint lias been made by parties who had made appli cation for final proof upon their home steads and preemptions, at their no tices not being promptly returned for publication, and their day of proof set by the register of the United States land office at Oregon City. In answer to their complaint Captain Apperson, register at the land office, asks that they examine their filing as to its date, and see if they have completed their entry. The law distinctly says that a person shall reside six full months upon a preemption and five years upon a homestead before final proof can be made, and no application for final proof wUl be entertained until the full time has expired, as shown by the records of the land office. Interested parties will therefore bear in mind that they will save themselves needless disappointment and the officers of the land office extra labor and annoyance by withholding their applications until their time for actual residence has fully expired.
