That big engine is a man killer, and it is hard on the boys to have to pull it to a fire, especially when there are only half a dozen to start it and keep it going for the first block or so. Sooner or later Astoria Engine Co., No. One, -will have to have a team of horses all same Res cue, Xo. 2, and the sooner the quicker. The tax-payers of Louisiana," says a New Orleans dispatch, "recog nize the fact that $1,000,000 a year is a big sum for the renewal of the lottery charter for tvrenly-fivo years, and they are not so bitter iu their denuncia tion of the lottery as they -were." It is believed that a two-third majority can bo obtained in the legislature to pass the lottery bill over governor Nichols veto, which certainly will fol low the passage of the act It is asserted that D. P. Thompson, in his speech accepting the nomina tion for governor at the Republican convention, declared that he would be elected governor, 'if it cost him 5100,000. This is not so. The writer sat within six feet of him when lie made his speech. "What he did say was that he proposed to be elected. "What would anybody, friend or foe, have him sa -that he proposed to be defeated!1 Any candidate, no matter for what, proposes to be elected.
