Tiitfq PR ill 11 & Hub PS f The following details regarding tho loss of the bark Corea, -were furnished the Commercial News by Geo. H. ' Foster, tho broker, who placed all tho insurance on the vessel aud cargo. The Corea was built in Boston in ' 1SG8, and last March was on tho dry dock here, where she was surveyed, opencdand thoroughly examined. Tho inspection was highly satis factory. Tho vessel was owned by the Arctic Fish ing Co., and loaded supplies for that company's cannery at KessilofT river, Alaska. She sailed on her ninth voyago for those waters under com mand of Captain Wheeler, whose third voyage it was as commander and who ' had previously made several voyages to the same place in her as first mate. Un Apnl 23d, at 3 a. jr.. the Corea , struck on a shoal, off Kalgin island, - uunng tuicK weather. Some coal and , lumber were jettisoned, anchor not I out and all sails except royal set, and the vessel was worked oil the shoal. I It was immediately discovered that she was leaking badly, and with con-1 stant work at the pumps the water gained. The bark finally reached Cook's inlet, twenty-five miles from ! the shoal where she first struck and fifteen miles south of Kessiloff river, rrlti 41si An.MA... - fAA.1 TTT1. ' nuLio uju uiuiuuij is jucaieu. vmen ( beached the water was up to the lower deck. The Corea went ashore head on, with all sails set, but soon swung broadside to the sea, exposed to a heavy southwest swell. After getting off tho shoal, the captain got ont a ! quantity of provisions, which on beaching the vessel, were successfully landed, as were all hands, consisting of officers, crew, twenty white and seventy-seven Chinese passengers. Tfte vessel was then stripped of sails, rig ging, etc., and a survey called. The survey was held May 4th, the board consisting of the captains of the barkentine Tarn O'Shanter, tug Thistle and Mr. Williams, Snperin dent of G. "W". Hume's cannery at Cook's Inlet. The vessel was con demned and sold next day at auction ! as she lay on the beach, cargo and hull bringing S3T5. Mr. Howard, ' owner of a coal mine some forty miles south of the wreck being the pnrchaser. The position of the vessel on a beach where a heavy surf breaks, and snr rounded bj- rocks, makes it impossible to get anything but a dorv near her. consequently vessel and cargo are a ' total loss, with it is estimated, about j 83,000 salvage, exclusive of the stores saved to feed the shipwrecked people, The exact insurance Is as follews: Hull Cargo , Freight , Advances to Chinese.. .12,500 . 42.C0O . Tho Breeze on Tuesday told a story of a cat at Bris tol, Ct., which had developed a taste for bullhead fishing, even to the ex tent of overcoming the natural cat repugnance to water and in con sequence, sho quite often received a thorough soaking. An almost parallel case, exists in this city, a cat belonging to Wm. B. Follansbee having learned to prose cute tho minnow fishery in an intelli gent and successful manner. Mr. Follansbee relates that the cat will wade into the waters of Little river, until it is up around her lejrs. and Keeping a seine a to the close watch, will suddenly fish, and pressing it bottom. will crradn- ally drag it ashoro or into a place niiuujkwiu uu liuiun 111 nur iiiuuiii. The animal was taught to do this, by catching minnows and placing them in ; a shallow dish with a little water. Gradually the depth was increased until a small tub was used, in which the cat would placo one paw and feel j around for the fish. The habit ofi fishing for herself has thus become fastened upon her.
