WITHOUT IXTEIUtlSSlOW Beginning June 1st, The Daily Morning Astoeian will bo issued every day in the year. Portland. Seattle, and Tacoma eacli have a daily paper that appears every day in the week. The time has come when the sea port city of Oregon .should also be able to boast of a daily newspaper that appears every day in the year. Accordingly Tnn Daily Morning Astokian will appear on Monday, June 1st just the same as on other days, and hereafter will appear every day in the week. For many years it has been a wel come visitor six days in the week, and will now talk for Astoria seven days in the week, withont intermission. ADVASCISG WESTWAltD. The census of90 will soon begin. It is interesting to notice in what a straight Hue westward the center of population has moved. For one hun dred years the point which rep resents the center of the republic has been steadily moving due westward, along the thirty-ninth parallel of north latitude. Its average rate of progress lias been about five miles per year lu 1S00 its location was eighteen miles wot of Baltimore, Md.: in 1S10 it had crossed the Potemac: in 1S20 it was well on the western side of tbe Shen andoah valley: in 1S30, it had reached the highest ridge of the Ap palachian meuntains: in 1S50, still following alongMason and Dixon's line it had passed the mountain barriers and was following the course of the Little Kanawha river through West Virginia: within tho next ten years it had by a rapid march of more than eighty miles, reached a point over halt way across the stale of Ohie: in 1S70 it was within fifty miles of Cincinnati: in 18S0 it had entered the valley of the Miami: the census that begins next Monday will probably locate the cen ter of the republic well within the boundary of Indiana, swinging on ward lo the north and west. Tacoita, a village compared to Port land, is assessed at SG0,000,000. Port land is assessed at S20,000,000-one-third the amount of Tacoma. It should be 200,000,000. People in Clatsop county and every county in tbe state have to pay higher taxes by reason of the swindle. They can cor rect this abuse by their votes at tho polls next Monday, if they want to. A tackage that cost 73 cents from Kansas City, Mo., to Sacramento, Cal., cost S2.50 from Sacramento to Eugene. The Eugene Guard thinks that a few more railroad commissioners in this state might make it imiossible to ship freight. XAK1NE NEWS AND NOTES. The little steamer Puritan is gone to Alaska.
