Cz; ithc flaHg Historian. ASTOXIA. OREGON: S.Vn?KDXY. MAY 21. 1600 CItyal Cotmtj-OMcIal Paper. MARINE NEWS AND NOTES. Odo-P- KovrELii & Co. publish a ht of the best or most widely circu lated and influential newspapers issued at iraporiaut business centers through out the country -the newspa per in each place that gives the advertiser the most for his money. On this list Tire Astoriak is named for Astoria. Tax (hwibian tries to create prejudice by reference to the Oregon- iatu That is the most contemptible of all its contemptible efforts, and illus trates how hard put they are to And sioajelhlnK to invent regarding this piper. Afxek saying that the fishermen were shot to death by guns pointed by law and order, the Columbian crew licked sad fawned upon the survivors till kicked back to their kennels. This is their idea of "journalism," to blow hot and cold; say a thing one day and take it back the next, and try to foment trouble every way possible. One of the Columbian crew was sround yesterday trying to get candi dates to sign a statement that the Columbian hadn't tried to blackmail them. Up to midnight last night he liad succeeded in getting one the can didate for coroner on the Republican ticket to affix his signature to such a declaration. Fancy a creature claim ing to be a "journalist" humiliating himelf by tacgiug after candidates, begging them to sign a certificate that he hadn't tried to get money from them. And he talks of his "influence.' Why he Lr not been here long enough to entitle him to a vote on June 2nd. What is blackmail? Well, if putting in an announcement for a candidate without instructions from him, and then trjing to get the candidate to pay for what he never ordered, isn't blackmail, it is as near it as six is near half a dozen. Tnn Columbian this morning publishes a statement from one candi date that it thc Columbian) didn't blackmail him. One is a good many. Now let it devote the rest of the time between now and election to getting a similar statement from the other thirty-one candidates. Before election js the time for it to get its work in. It can't coax a single one of the whole lot to sicn anv such statement the morning after election. The Columbian chorus. "And when we think of what we are and what we used to was: we think we've th rowed ourselves away without sufficient cause.' The sleam schooner Augusta nr rived yesterday from Tillamook, The steamer 22. P. Elmore yester day towed a largasoow from Elmore's cannery to the fish traps near Sarid island. The steamer Signal arrived last evening at 10:15 from Port Townsend and will proceed up the river this morning. The steamer Puritan, Capt Mon tell, cleared at the custom house, yes terday, for Wrangel, Alaska, loaded only with her own stores and supplies. The ship Belle of Bath has received nearly all her cargo of lumber, and Capt Curtiss went up to Portland last evening on the steamer. When he re turns ho will complete arrangements for an early departure for Melbourne, Australia. The steamer Manzanita went down to Fort Stevens yesterday, but learn ing that the entrance to Shoalwater bay was very rough, returned to the city, and will start this morning for Shoalwater bay, if the weather is favorable, and examine the buoys at that place. QUEEN VICS. BIRTHDAY. Boss Opera House One Night Only, THURSDAY, MAY 29. Wm. A. Brady's Magnificent Production of B0UCICAULT3 "AFTER DARK." To-Day The Seventy-First Anniversary. Seventy-one years ago to-day was born England's queen, May 24th, 1819. Her reign extends from her accession to the British throne, on the death of William 4th, in June 1837, continuously for nearly fifty-three years. Two generations have journeyed past, since Victoria assumed the crown of the island empire, the stalwart sup porters of that crown, prime ministers and lords and commonshave appeared in public life, run their official course, died and passed partially into oblivion, but Victoria still reigns, and year after year, amid the snows of Canada, the sands oi India, tne Australian dush, the New Zealand crags, in court and camp and city, the world round, where ever those who were born under the British flag and "hold allegiance to the red cross of St. George are found, they gather on the 24th of May to com memorate the birthday of their Queen, touch a glass and drink a health in honor of her who is the symbol of government to those of British birth, where e'er they live, whether at the pole or on the torrid central line of the round earth, that is girdled by her garrisons and daily greets the sun from sea to sea. So, in accordance with the customs that seventy recurring years have seen, the British residents of Astoria and their invited guests will have a dinner at the Occident hotel to-night in honor of the day. The hour for assembling is nine o'clock, sharp. From Holy writ: "Now no man can frve two masters; for he must love the one and hate the other, or he must cleave to the one aud despise the other. The Columb ian despises the public, and loves only the three or four who put up for it and make it possible to daily insult the intelligence of our citizens by its silly vaporiiigs. Sparc the Real Estate Man. Some of the business men of Spokane think that the proposed exposition is n scheme gotten up by real estate dealers to boom real estate, and on that account decline to help it along. This is wrong; since, as a rule, the real estate men are about the only men in the city who have nerve enough to invest their money without a positive guarantee that they are going to get it back at a certain time accompanied with big gains. Spokane had better let her real estate men alone. tip rogue Advertiser. Presented bere In Uie same superb manner that characterized thereeeat successful engagements In New. The. public will notice that uot in :i sie instance has the Columbian dared to deny the charges made by Ibis paper, nor has it in a single in et&Bce attempted to deny the exposures. Sach exposures have overwhelmed tbcaitrilh obloquy. There doesn't appear to be much need or The Astoiuax's wasting any ammunition ou dead ducks. The few small shot that spilled out of the boxes did tke business, and the larger car tridges weren't needed. They will be kept in a dry place, though, and may " come handy later on. The Columbian's little plot to move the telegraph office didn't work any better than 'the effort to get dis patches at au earlier hour than its contemporaries. It was a great scheme but the Columbian couldn't oarry it out They lacked the nerve. Tbey had the gall, Weli' said a California visitor yesterday to the two chief conspira tors in the Columbian office, "you fellows ought to bag your heads. Af ter roving around San Francisco and working in the Examiner office, I thought you Avere too 4fly to let a cosntry editor as -you call him, get away with you the way he has.
